Media:: Magazine Coursework Evaluation

This document evaluates the author's media magazine coursework. It discusses how the magazine uses conventions of real magazines such as mastheads, headlines, and page numbers. The magazine represents a particular social group of ages 15-22 interested in electro pop music. Bauer Media would be a suitable distributor as it is a large European company that could advertise the magazine across multiple platforms. The author learned skills in photography, Photoshop, web design, outsourcing, syndication, and video marketing through developing this magazine coursework.

Media: Magazine Coursework

Evaluation
By Matthew Atkinson
1. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of
real media products?

My music magazine uses the conventions of a real magazine, as it includes a

masthead, selling line, feature article photo and headline, a menu strip ,flash,
anchorage, plugs, visual feature, barcode, price and date line. All of these
conventions work together to sell the magazine. My contents page also uses the
conventions of a real magazine. I used page numbers with a piece of information
to indicate where about in the magazine you can find the article, to make it
easier for the reader. I used a JPEG image of my front cover for the subscription,
this further sells the magazine to the audience. I also added a editorial to quickly
summarise to the reader the contents of the magazine. Again, the double page
spread also uses the conventions of a real magazine. It contains a title, images,
an opening paragraph, an article and quotes. All of the pages are linked
together by the colour scheme, black, white, gray and pink, and the font type.
This signifies that all the different parts communicate to promote and sell the
magazine.

2. How does your media product represent particular social groups?

My media product definitely represents a particular social group.

All of the artists and bands used are from the same style and
genre of music, electro pop, dance. The title ‘Retro’ also suggests
an older style like the 80’s and 90’s. My magazine communicated
with the social group by giving away free things such as hoodies.
It also gives information of concerts and gigs as, the social group
is suggested to attend events such as these. This creates a
lifestyle and ideology for the reader, and an image is created for
the social group by the images, colours and artists.

Although Hearst seems to be the biggest media
company, I would have chosen Bauer Media to
run my magazine, as Hearst is nation wide and
seems to centre its products in America, where as
Bauer media is based in Europe therefore will
have a better idea about publishing magazines in
the UK. Because it is a large media group it means
it will have a lot of money to spend on and
advertise my magazine. As Bauer Media runs TV
stations, radio stations and online web pages, it
means that my magazine could potentially get a
radio station , TV station or website. This
combined with the vast amounts of money the
company have , gives my magazine many
opportunities.
4. Who would be the audience for your media product?

The audience for my magazine would consist

of both males and females of a younger
generation, from the ages of 15 to 22. it would
appeal to those that are mainly interested in
music, as well as fashion, media and celebrity.
They would listen to pop, electro pop , chart
music and dance music. They would enjoy
going to concerts and music festivals. They
would be individuals, passionate, care free and
up for a good time.
5. How did you attract/address your audience?

I attracted the audience by using vibrant colours and contrasting darker

colours, which makes the magazine more noticeable and makes it stand
out. The bright colours signify the youth of the genre and the audience ,
teenagers. The free hoodie entices the audience to buy the magazine
because they are getting free gifts. Colloquial language is used
throughout the magazine , especially in the article and interview, so that
it is easy for the audience to understand and it is more relatable for
them. The main feature picture can create a buzz for the reader is
particularly interested in that band or artist, also other images of artist
or writing about an artist may also do the same if the reader is a fan.
The use of fonts and images, relate to the teenage audience because it
reflects their personality and their style, bright, vibrant colours, bold
lettering. It creates an overall lively image.
6. What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

Photography
I have learnt the different angles and shots and have learnt the different effects they
have. I have learned how a certain type of shot can give meaning to a picture. I have
researched which angles are used for magazines and which are suitable for certain
pages. I have used these ideas in my magazine so that it is similar to a real music
magazine.

Photoshop
I used a lot of tools while using Photoshop, I used the quick selection tool quite a
lot as it enabled me to cut out images with ease. I also used the text tool which
was helpful especially when it came to the article and the contents page. Also
something that I used on my article was the path tool. This enabled me to make my
article look more authentic like a real magazine article. I used the paint brush tool
and used different brush strokes to make stars. Id learnt many skills while working
with Photoshop.
Web
For my magazine, i plan on having a website. This would consist of information on
the current magazine that was being sold now, news and information on free
merchandise, as well as having an online store and forum and information
concerning concerts and gigs. It would be made easy to access by being split up
into tabs, this will also make it more organised. You would be able to buy and
subscribe to the magazine online and have the option of downloading an online
magazine. A mobile version will be made so that it can be accessed by mobiles and
other hand held devices.

Outsourcing
To create my blog I would hire professionals online from www.elance.com , this
would make the website more secure and stable and make it look more
professional . They would work on maintaining the website and any other
administrative duties allowing myself more time to make new designs and to come
up with new ideas on updates for the website.
Syndicating
I would have a free social networking site to enable users to post to multiple social
networks simultaneously. This means my readers could voice there opinion on both
music and the actual magazine. This creates a new dimension of audience-designer
interaction which therefore means improvement for the magazine and more
understanding of what the reader wants.

Video marketing
http://www.trafficgeyser.com/ and http://www.tubelasterpro/index.php are
video distributers that distribute content you post on social networking sites and
send out bulletins, comments and messages. I would have a site like this for my
magazine as music videos and live footage from the artists and bands is important
to the audience. It would able them to share new videos by artists and bands.
7. Looking back at your preliminary task (the College magazine), what do you feel you have
learnt in the progression from it to full product?

Looking back at my attempt at a college magazine and comparing it with my music

magazine, there is a dramatic difference. My skills and my understanding of the
conventions of making a magazine have improved. My music magazine looks more like
an authentic magazine as it has the conventions of a real magazine. The photography
for my music magazine looks more professional because of the research I did on angles
and shot types. Since making my college magazine, my Photoshop skills have improved,
thus improving the quality of my work. Instead of using the fonts on Photoshop, for my
masthead, I got a font from www.dafont.com . There is also more of a flow between the
different pieces of work, this is accomplished with a colour scheme and text. I have also
used magazine conventions for the contents page which also looks more professional
than my college magazine. Some of the conventions used on my contents page are
columns for my page numbers and an editorial and subscription. Overall, the time
between making my college magazine and my music magazine, i have gained a better
knowledge on what a magazine should look like and its conventions and how to use
different techniques on Photoshop.
