Modulus: Prepared By: Dinesha A/P Vairappan Siti Nurhafizah Muuyedin

- Modulus, also known as absolute value, represents the numerical value of a real number without regard to its sign. It is denoted by vertical lines around the number, such as |x|. - For complex numbers, the modulus is defined as the square root of the sum of the real and imaginary parts squared. The modulus represents the distance of a complex number from the origin. - In equations, the modulus represents the distance between variables. For example, |x-2|=5 means the distance between x and 2 is 5, so the possible values of x are 7 and -3. Modulus is used to solve inequality equations involving absolute values.

MODULUS

PREPARED BY:
DINESHA A/P VAIRAPPAN
SITI NURHAFIZAH MUUYEDIN
- Also known as absolute value

- This means the modulus or absolute numbers of a real number is its numerical value
without regard to its sign

- For example : 3 is the modulus for both 3 and -3

REAL NUMBER
-the modulus of a number a is denoted by | a |

-it also defined as

| a| = a if a ≥ 0
-a if < 0
-used in square-root number
-it normally defines as positive square root:

| a|=√a²

which sometimes used as the definition

-example:
|√-4²|=|-4|
=4

COMPLEX NUMBER
-for any complex number
|z|=x + íy
where x and y are real numbers, the modulus of z is denoted |z| and defined
as
|z|=√(x²+y²)
- Example :
the Modules of complex number 3 + 4i is given as | 3 + 4i | = √(3² +4²)
=√(9+ 16)
=√25
=5
Modulus as distance
 The modulus of an expression “x-a” is interpreted to
represent “distance” between “x” and “a” on the real
number line.
 example :
|x−2|=5
This means that the variable “x” is at a distance “5” from
“2”. The values of “x” satisfying this equation is :
⇒x−2=±5
Either
⇒x=2+5=7
or,
⇒x=2−5=−3
Example of modulus/ absolute numbers:
a) |-3x| < 6
|x| < -6∕ 3
|x| < -2
X=2

b)|x| < 2
-2 < x< 2

c) |x| > 3
X > 3 or x < -3
Example of modules question:
a) |2x -3|<5
-5<2x-3<5
-2<2x<8
-1<x<4

b)|5-6x|>7
5-6x>7 or 5-6x<-7
-2>6x or 12< 6x
x <-1∕3 or x>2
