Interior Decoration and Design

Graduates 2009
‘Design is not beauty,
beauty emerges from
selection, affinities,

integration,love.’
- Louis Khan.

Our graduates and their skills embody this sentiment. They have
evolved like a butterfly - From chrysalis to flight.

Their evolution is like the design process itself, unfolding

from small beginnings to something far greater. And now, at the
end of 2009, they are ready to present themselves. Their design
work and business skills enabled them to produce this end of year
Exhibition, to promote, to intrigue and to invite comment and
interaction.

While their journey with us is now complete, come and share their
hopes, plans and dreams for 2010 and beyond at the IDD>2009
Graduate Exhibition.

SELECTION: They chose RMIT, and their individual paths

AFFINITIES: They share a sense of all that's good in
design and decoration
INTEGRATION: They understand the need to combine aesthetic values
with good communication
LOVE: Their passion has provided the energy for this journey
- they are to be applauded.

We wish them every success sailing into the future of Interior

Design and Decoration.

This event showcases the work of RMIT Interior Decoration and
Design Graduates for 2009.
It is an Exhibition which introduces us as young decorators and
designers and promotes the identity of the ID + D program to
industry and beyond.

Student work is exhibited collectively, bringing four diverse

project briefs from Design Studio; restaurant/bar, retail store fit-
out, decorating couture of a drawing room and finally a concept for
exhibition design.

It was from Design Studio exhibition concepts that the structure

and aesthetic of this event was formed.

The exhibition design team is a collective of dedicated students.

We have worked together in the design, co-ordination and
implementation of this event.

The unique construction our display system was inspired by a

concept of design for the financial crisis. Re – use was considered
central to our design approach. Quantities of recycled cardboard
were used to develop a unified method of display. In collaboration
with Buzz Products (major sponsor), our system for display became
modular and flexible with use of their inventive and reusable
MAKEDO clips.
Guidance and direction has been provided by RMIT teaching staff,
Ann Maher and Genevieve Galvin.

Thank you to all of our sponsors for your generosity.

To share our support for the community, all proceeds

from your cold coin donation will go to the charity,
Kids Under Cover.

The teachers and students welcome you to the ID + D < 09

Graduation Exhibition.

Design is the world in which my creativity lives.
My recent experience as a Design Student has given me the
courage to go forward and call myself an Interior Designer
& Decorator. I wish for a future that encourages and
allows me to think “outside the box” & to create
innovative and inspiring interiors.

What is design?
“Design is that area of human experience, skill and knowledge
which is concerned with man’s ability to mould his environment
to suit his material and spiritual needs.” It is essentially a
rational, logical, sequential process intended to solve problems
or, “initiate change in man-made things”
Is this true?
Not all of us believe in design or consider its importance.
It’s extraordinary, how each one of us are designed to fit in to
our environments and yet we ignore it. Imagine not having hands or
feet or any other part of your body.
Except that evolution has created the ultimate design. “YOU”
So love design and it will help you evolve.
Anne Perera
Anything in design is possible – the only limitation is
your imagination.
Decoration and design has become a journey for me during
these last two years and from now on a lifestyle.

“My aim is to help people embrace the colour within
themselves. Colour is one of my favourite aspects of
design. It is decorative and can enhance any space,
therefore should be considered in every project. Colour is
the new black!”

DESIGN
I can read your mind and I know your story and I see what you’re
going through It’s an uphill climb, and I’m feeling sorry But I
know it will come to you When you want it the most there’s no easy
way out When you’re ready to go and your heart’s left in doubt
Don’t give up on your faith Design comes to those who believe it
When you question me for a simple answer I don’t know what to say,
But it’s plain to see, if we stick together You’re gonna find the
way Don’t surrender coz’ you can win

“Items from boutiques, flea markets, vintage and antiques
stores, and auctions, and roadside finds also help you
connect with historical styles, past lives, and more
offbeat aesthetics...They have helped me appreciate
different kinds of furniture, the quality and history
of antiques, and how to creatively juxtapose them.”

Life is about regrowth and new beginnings. It’s about
dreams, hopes and inspiration. The concept theme for
my design proposal for the 2009 Interior Decoration and
Design Graduation Exhibition was developed from the
Victorian fires of February 2009, which affected many
people. It symbolizes a new future and a new generation
of interior decorators and designers beyond 2009. My ID +
d < 09 design captures the essence of the mood, displaying
students work as a representation of the regrowth
following “Black Saturday”. This design acts as a metaphor
for our future.

Interior Decoration and Design…
To me, design is a statement. Its something bold and
unique filled with colour, patterns and emotions.
It is visualising the potential of an empty space, and
creating interiors that are embellished, vibrant, moving
and evocative.

Interior Design & Decoration has been a passionate
interest of mine for over 20 years.
I enjoy combining old and modern objects & elements with
an edgy twist. This can benefit from the use of Fung Shui
to create a harmonious balance.
A practical layout and functional design solutions are
essential to create classic design.

Charly Knezic
An art piece is like planning for a holiday trip, ‘Where
do I want to go?’ ‘What do I want to accomplish?’ What
starts as a vague sense of want slowly settles into a deep
sense of purpose, and soon enough, I find myself reaching
out, taking in all that I see, and transferring them into
a montage of ideas that express what I feel. I often say
that life is a journey, and these expressions paint each
moment of my journey in vivid detail, capturing them more
accurately than any words ever could.

Design is the method of putting form and content together.
Design, just as art, has multiple definitions; there is
no single definition. Design can be art. Design can be
aesthetics. Design is so simple, that’s why it is so
complicated.
....the designer must be able to see - make a concentrated
effort to absorb the essence of the project. Seeing is a
very difficult thing to do. Most people “look” at a lot
of thing but never “see” anything. Looking is emotional;
seeing is an intellectual process.

The essence of interior design will always be about
people. The way people live, the way people interact

key reason to why interior design is significant to me.

‘Medley Hall in ROCOCO Style’
The inspiration for the drawing room comes from the blue topaz
gemstone which is one of my favourite stones. I have chosen the
yellow gold to surround the topaz giving it a more luxurious and
traditional feel.
The colours for this scheme, together with the selection of soft
furnishings are also inspirited by a traditional Korean dress
called HAN BOK.
A French style mantel and decorative mouldings on panelling and
selective black furniture give the room a dramatic look.
The theme of this design is extravagant, lusurious, comfortable,
interesting and artistic.

Eunbyul Seo Stella

Medley Hall drawing room will be a place where guests are
entertained in upmost style and sophistication.
This space has been influenced by the socialite tradition of afternoon tea that
was started in the 17th century by Dutchess Anne the 7th Dutchess of Bedford.
Afternoon tea was a meal taken around four o’clock when
society women would congregate in elegant gowns to gossip over tea and cake.
Their gowns were of the highest fashion, often more decorative than practical
and it is this sculptural aspect which has inspired the white silk curtains
and lights are that are the features of this room.
Traditional afternoon tea consists of a selection of dainty sandwiches,
scones, cakes and pastries. Tea is poured from silver tea pots into delicate
bone china cups with gold trimmings. The patterns of the china cups are
mirrored into the fabric collection, as are the gold touches which finish the
room.
Traditionally a drawing room is used to display a family’s prized possessions
often fine porceline such as figurines, plates, cups and vases. Wedgwood has
established itself as the premier name for this style of art, recognized as
synonymous with elegant tea ware. In recognition of this, I have chosen to
continue a Wedgwood style into the detailing of the walls, a coloured base with
a crisp white relief.

should function. For me, that world should be clean,
simple, bold and beautiful whilst having maximum impact’

Genevieve Stone
Design is challenging what is normal.
The design process explodes the imagination with new
possibilities. A design’s final solution is about the
inspiration that it creates, the way it makes you feel
about something and how you interact with it.
If you have succeeded in inspiring one person then you
have achieved.

What designs means to me?
Design is a form of communication. It is a language
that can be interpreted to reflect desires, emotions
and knowledge. It has direction and it has purpose.
Design brings life and a sense of curiosity to existing
environments both old and new. My two years at RMIT
Interior Decoration and Design, has seen me develop not
only my own personal style and process but also a greater
knowledge of history of design that underpins Modern
contemporary work.

Hannah Ward
Nothing is always something.
And something can equal to nothing.
So if you add something to nothing you get something.
And if you add something the end result can be nothing if
you were starting from negative or without it in the first
place.

Haych Parim
Design is the language, Decoration is the grammar: each
project has been a sentence that explores growth and self-
discovery!!!!!!! It’s been a two-year journey that has
allowed me to explore cultural and historical references
and to embed them into my personal design philosophy……..
decorative, glamorous, eclectic, sophisticated, all
with a sense of humour and often with a quirky sense of
kitsch. Yes I’m passionate, yes I’m dedicated and yes I am
committed to working in the Design Industry and it will
always be with unbridled enthusiasm.

Heath Canobie
Design is the development of a visual awareness for ones ideas,
knowledge, skills, and passion. Design cannot accomplish its
purpose without people to use it, to help solve problems or needs.
An aspect of design is considering its short and long-term impacts
in consequence of the materials used.
Good design is invisible and taken for granted; unlike the irony
of bad design. The highest tribute bequeath on a design isn’t
that it is beautiful, as in Art; but its motive is to be well-
used, provide functionality with aesthetics, and shift people’s
perceptions.

RE-USE MATERIALS EXHIBITION
The location of Exhibition is at Meeting Rom 01, The Trades Hall Building,
at the Corner of Lygon and Victoria Street, Melbourne. Trades Hall is of
architectural significance as a fine surviving example of a large 19th century
institutional building. Its conservative style reflects the aspirations towards
social respectability of the early Trades Hall leadership. It is a rare
example of a building constructed in stages over a long period from 1873-1926,
which remains consistent with its original 1870s style. It is an outstanding
example of 19th century craftsmanship, with architectural records showing
that its builders prided themselves on using the best of local materials and
building skills.

The designed of students are actualized; this is an innovation of a group of

Young Designers. In Exhibition, the students need to design a space to present
all the final year work of Interior Decoration and Design Graduation. Central
to the theme is INTERIOR + DECORATION + DESIGN. (Id + D)

RE-USE is central to the method and good design solutions don’t have to be
expensive. So a great ideas for re-use material without expensive is BOTTLE.
There are more than thousand of bottles be throw every day in restaurants at
Melbourne, we also can collect them for free. Another material is used in
this design is recycle plastic.

The highlight of this design is lighting put inside the bottle. In the meeting
room, all A2 boars are arranged random on a steel frame. And the bottles with
the light inside are put behind of these A2 boars to created a light reflection
to the viewers. All walls of this room will be decoration with wallpapers. The
idea continuing to the entry area, the steel frame is also used for reception
area with logo decoration, the bar area is put arrange for the viewers can
take drink and go around the exhibition space. The outstanding point of entry
area is a white plastic screen. This screen is bored a holes, and the bottle
with the face and IDD of Students inside are hang in these holes.

Design to me…
It all starts from an idea supported by inspiration and
resulting into a unique design.
Designing is never ending, redeveloping and evolving the
world we live in.
A unique design effects how we feel and see things.
Design idea comes from within ones self making each design
distinctive.
It is a form of visual communication, for people of all
backgrounds and ages.

More and more consumers are becoming aware that a building’s
interior should not only be pleasing to the eye, but durable,
environmentally friendly and conducive to good health. A growing
consumer demand, the availability of green products is constantly
increasing, leading to a situation where product quality need not
be compromised in a search for a more eco friendly interior.
The choice of materials is very important not only regarding
the nature, but also the health of the people who will live or
work in a particular place. Choosing to use recycled materials
would add to the greenness of an interior. My concept for Medley
hall intends to use eco friendly materials with embellishing and
feeling comfortable and lovable space.

A common perception is that not only are Interior Design and Interior
Decoration different disciplines, but that one is superior to the other.
Having completed an Interior Design degree and an Interior Decoration diploma,
I have come to the conclusion that by combining the two disciplines, the
overall result achieved in a space can be taken to a new level. From knowledge
gained in both fields of study, my design approach has become more holistic. I
now find that my design process unifies the elements of design and decoration
rather than viewing them as separate entities. Therefore, the overall quality
and experience that a space provides is enriched.
As I embark on my career in design, I feel that interior decoration has made
me a better designer and interior design has made me a better decorator.

Designing to me is about being able to structure the
imagination, I’ve always keep in mind that decoration and
design is not so much a look, yet a point of view. Over
my time growing and learning how to reform myself as a
designer, I have come to realize that a design is only as
good as its weakest point.
Designing to me is having the ability to find a solution
and creativity is part of the design process, it’s all
about making mistakes along the way, the key is figuring
out which ones you should keep.

“Style is taken from history….design is created from scratch” Karim Rashid.
Interior Decoration and Design ideally begins with a blank canvas…the process
of Design allows me to start from scratch. All spaces can be transformed into
unique, exquisite, and truly remarkable reflections of personal experiences
and personal inspirations.

Success for me is in the creation of spaces that give freedom for others to
attach their own interpretations and emotions to mine and for a mutual deep
sense of personal attachment to be a lasting force.

Design for me has so far been an exciting 2 year journey. This course has
opened my eyes to the unlimited possibilities that lie within my future as a
Decorator and Designer. I look forward to creating my own design journey and
to sharing inspiration with others. Design is my passion, always has been,
always will be.

French Louis Medley Hall
This interior is a drawing room for twenty people. I have
chosen 18th-19th French Louis style to be my inspiration.
As of its style, ‘S’ & ‘C’ curves can be seen a lot in
this interior. The colour scheme of the room is purple,
black, silver, white & a bit of gold. Metallic colours
have been used on fabric, furniture frame or legs to
represent the gilt element in Louis Style. Besides
the wooden furniture, I have introduced glass/acrylic
furniture in this room, to give a bit of modern feeling.

The restaurant ‘BERKERS’ is located in the basement of building 71, Cardigan
Street, South Carlton. This area of Carlton is on the fringe of the city and
is vibrant with students during the day and visitors to the area and locals
at nights. The building has a lot of Art Deco references and these must be
maintained and redeveloped.
The client is a group of male and female “30s” professionals who live and
work in the city. they are financial and have decided after spending a great
deal of their recent years surveying bars in Melbourne. They have a vision
of creating something unique that has a vibe and that is successful during
the day and night. They are passionate about sustainable design and require a
design solution that reflects this.
The name of this bar is Berkers. ‘Berkers’ was originated from “Jerry
Berkers” who was a rock musician from the Netherlands. This design is vintage
in inspiration and reflects the 1960’s and 70’s. This was the era that Jerry
performed for American troops in Vietnam.
The main colour scheme is driven by grays and black. However vivid colours
are used for the accent colours. The overall wall colour is faded gray and it
is decorated with vintage style artworks. This space has 3 main areas which
are bar, dinning and private dining.
The bar area has a lot of bar stools to use the space efficiently. Metallic
materials and finishes create an unusual atmosphere with mood lightings.
Vintage and casual style furniture are used for the dining area. Patterned
fabrics are used as partitions and draperies in the private dining area.
This space is not too formal but not too casual. Customers can come to have
diner and drink on the way to walk around road. The dark lighting and wall
colour complement the atmosphere of this vintage themed restaurant.

Design is a form of communication that needs no words.

There are no limitations. It is a language that has the

ability to evoke personal response. It is a way I can
communicate with the world.

passion.

Design is everywhere!
Designs impact, effect, inspire and change people. Designs
influence an opinion and enhance a point of view. It can
be beautiful, simple, practical or fashionable. Design is
the practice of creativity and provides the opportunity to
enhance the way we live.

I am inspired by the natural world and the intricate
designs inherit in it. I try to take what is on the
outside in nature and transform interior spaces so that
they give people a sense of familiarity and warmth. I do
this by incorporating forms, patterns and shapes from both
the natural and human world I see around me, and attempt
to distill these in a design sense, to something that can
be fashioned and used to modify an interior. My goal at
the end of the day is for my interiors to be a source of
enjoyment for those who experience them, and to bring the
people who inhabit them, closer together.

It creates new wonders; it reuses the past to the future;
it recycles a theme.
It moves and shapes the world. It comes from an influence

element. It can make itself become an influence and be
revolutionary.
This ‘it’ is called DESIGN.

Decoration and Deign is an expression of the soul, a
collaboration of beautiful, meaningful pieces gathered by
an individual, then arranged to show the world who they
are, and what they are about.
Through decoration and design gorgeous spaces can be
created, spaces that are enjoyed, admired and utilized to
their full potential.
Decoration and Design makes the world a more enjoyable
place to be.

Design is about innovation and functionality, about making
better decisions to create an improved future. It’s
unique but it’s for everybody. It represents a vision, a
dream and an achievement. Design is art, it’s beautiful,
a passion, an obsession… It’s about evolving, daring to
create and envision something new, and forever improving
something once new. Design is then, design is now, design
is the future. Design is life…

the heart of the Paris End of Melbourne’s CBD, will be a high

of exclusive retail, the centre of style, power and influence.
The idea is took from Guccio Gucci as a fashion designer and
human body as a metaphor to give a new look to the store.Gucci has
himself etched in watches, bags, footwear and clothes. The bamboo
vintage handle bag became his signature of style and from the
newest collection in 2008 which figured the body attitude create
interesting curve lines.

Design is not style.
It is not about giving shape to the shell and not giving
and not giving a damn about the guts.
Good design has a broad sensual appeal. It is
aesthetically balanced, interesting to touch, yet
comfortable. It has a conceptual component that
transcends function such as an allusion to movement that
suggests time and space. If your idea are any good, you
will to ram them down people’s throats.

The human body is a dynamic organism that interacts with
space and time. Design is a timeline of experience,

The concept of Medley Hall design is to mix the Pop Arts
and Rococo Style together which is called “Pop meets
Rococo”. It seems that Pop Arts and Rococo styles are
extremely contrast but for my design they can be together
very well. From my design you can see that every area are
mixed by Pop Arts & Rococo. I used Louis XV style for
furniture such as chaise, chairs, bookcase, and fireplace
and used Pop arts for the accessories and paintings. In
order to create luxury look I used the blue, silver and
gold for the color palette.

inside a space - walls, windows, doors, finishes, textures,
light, furnishings and furniture. It needs more creative
hand & computer skills. The specialty areas that involve
interior designers are limited only by the imagination and
are continually growing and changing. With the increase
in the aging population, an increased focus has been
placed on developing solutions to improve the living
environment of the elderly. It takes into account health
