Nursing Skill Revision

A skills revision workshop was organized on December 23rd, 2010 for year 4 nursing students to prepare for their clinical practice term and polish their skills and knowledge. Attendance at the workshop counts for 10% of their professional development course grade. Students will be divided into five groups and work with a nurse instructor from 2-5 PM to review skills like medication administration, blood transfusion, common nursing procedures, general documentation procedures, and topics for self study like health assessments, monitoring vital signs, and more.

Year 4 Nursing Skills Revision Workshop

In order to prepare year 4 students in advance for clinical practice in term 2, as well as to
polish up the skills and knowledge, a Skills Revision Workshop has been organized on
23-12-2010. Students’ attendance will be marked as this workshop accounts for 10%
mark in the assessment of Professional Development in the course of NURS4113.

The laboratory revision session will be from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Students are divided into
five groups and one nurse instructor will be responsible for one group of students.
Students are encouraged to book laboratory for self practice prior to clinical practice.

The suggested skills and knowledge which will be discussed and revised during the
laboratory session are listed below:

1. Administration of medication:
Correct 3 checks and 6 rights procedure
Common errors in the AOM procedure
Common IV fluids, drugs and antibiotics and their preparation
Common insulin preparation, DKI drip and POCT

2. Blood transfusion:
Correct Patient Identity (3D bar code) in blood taking and blood transfusion
Complications of blood transfusion

3. Common nursing skills:


Urinary catheterization
Insertion of naso-gastric tube and checking of correct placement and NG tube feeding
Tracheostomy suction
Aseptic technique on wound care, stitches or staples removal and TPN
Care of chest drain

4. General procedures:
Documenting nurses’ progress notes and reporting of shift report
Emergency and clinical admission procedure
Health education and advice on discharge
Proper procedure in handling of specimen

5. Self study:
Health and physical assessment
Assessing and monitoring of vital signs, CVP
Pre and post operative care of client after surgery
Preparing client for diagnostic procedures
Common Rehabilitation Programs
Common medical conditions
CPR and ACLS
Infection control
Nursing Care Plan
