Preliminary Report (Steganography) : Project Description

This document provides a preliminary report on a steganography application project. The application will hide important messages or files in other files without affecting quality by using least significant bits. The motivation for the project was unfamiliarity with steganography and improving on previous reports. Future plans include developing a system to use steganography on emails, embedding it in firewalls, and expanding hiding techniques beyond least significant bits.

PRELIMINARY REPORT (STEGANOGRAPHY)

PROJECT DESCRIPTION
This application will let you embed or hide important or private messages or files without
affecting the quality of actual files. It achieves this by using the least significant bits of these files
for embedding data.
The bit that carries the lowest value or weight in binary notation for a numeral; for
example, when 13 is represented in binary as 1101, the 1 at the right is the least significant bit
(Abbreviated LSB).

MOTIVATION
The primary reason for selecting Steganography among the list of possible projects topics
was due to the unfamiliarity of the word that twigged an interest in the subject.
Another motivation for researching the topic was after going through previous project
reports I found that this project has to be developed and made better by following improvements

 Should be able to hide information in image of format GIF or JPG


 Should be able to hide information and data files in images and even in video files of format
.MPG or .DAT or any audio file.
 Hidden information cannot be seen by anyone other than the user of this application

FUTURE SCOPE AND ENHANCEMENT PLANS WHICH ARE ENVISIONED


FOR THE PROJECT ARE THE FOLLOWING:

1. The development of a system that will utilize the Steganographic Obliterator on


incoming and email messages and attachments.

2. Investigate the feasibility of embedding the program in firewalls to act as a first line of
defense against Steganographic data transmission.

3. Expand the Steganographic algorithm attack method beyond the least significant bits
using some other techniques.
