Ba SO4

This document outlines a procedure to determine the solubility product (Ksp) and thermodynamic properties of sparingly soluble salt barium sulfate (BaSO4) conductometrically. The procedure involves determining the cell constant, measuring the conductivity of BaSO4 solutions at different temperatures, calculating solubility (S) and Ksp values, and using the results to determine the change in free energy (ΔG), enthalpy (ΔH), and entropy (ΔS) by plotting graphs of Ksp vs. temperature and log Ksp vs. 1/T. The key results are the reported values of Ksp at 25°C, ΔG, ΔH, and ΔS.

Aim: Determination of solubility product and thermodynamic properties of sparingly

soluble salt by conductmetrically.

Apparatus and chemicals: Conductometre, conductivity cell, thermostat, 0.01N KCl, BaSO4.
Procedure:
Part 1: Determination of cell constant.
1. Take sufficient amount of 0.01 N KCl solution into cell and dip electrode completely.
2. Find out the conductance of solution and calculate cell constant.

Part 2: Determination of solubility (S) and solubility product (Ksp) BaSO4.

1. Dissolved maximum amount of BaSO4 salt in distilled water and place this solution in
thermostat .
2. Record the conductance at different temperature.

ρ / S cm-1 gm lit-1 mole lit-1 (Ksp) mol2 lit2

Calculation:
1. ρ = Specific Conductance= cell constant × observed conductance.

2. Solubility (S): 1000 × ρ (λ∞ = 143.44 S cm2)

λ∞

3. Solubility product: [M+ (aq.)] [A- (aq.)] = S×S= S2 =………….. mol2 lit-1

4. Determination of change in free energy ΔG

Plot the graph of ‘Ksp’ against ‘T’ and from the graph find Ksp at 250C

ΔG= -2.303 RT log Ksp

R= 1.987cal/mole/degree
T= 298 0K
Ksp at 25 0C= ……. mol2 lit2 Ksp
Ksp at 25 0C= …….
ΔG= ….. cal
ΔG=…...Kcal 250C

T (0C)
5. Determination of change in enthalpy ΔH

ΔH= -2.303 T1T2 log Ksp1.

T1 – T2 Ksp2
ΔH= ………..cal. log Ksp

ΔH= ……… K cal

Plot the graph ‘log Ksp’ against‘1/T’ and find the slope.
1/ T
ΔH=-2.303 R [slope]
ΔH= ………..cal.
ΔH= ……… K cal

6. Determination of change in Entropy ΔS

ΔG – ΔH= TΔS

T ΔS = ΔH- ΔG

ΔS= ΔH – ΔG
T
ΔS=……… cal
Result:
1. Ksp of BaSO4 at 250C =……………… mol2 lit2
2. Change in free energy (ΔG) =………………Kcal
3. Change in enthalpy (ΔH) =………………Kcal
4. Change in Entropy (ΔS) =………………cal
