Careers in I

Information technology plays a major role in modern life through business and personal applications like data storage, processing, and communication. There are many career opportunities in IT that vary in their required qualifications. Jobs like programmers, systems designers, analysts, and managers typically require degrees or higher national diplomas, while others only need GCSEs or GNVQs. Good communication skills, logical thinking, problem solving ability, teamwork, and determination are valuable traits for many IT careers such as systems analysts, software engineers, computer programmers, technical support, and more specialized roles managing databases, networks, and communications.

CAREERS IN I.T.

INTRODUCTION
Information technology is a major influence in most of our lives, at
work and at home. There are so many business and industrial
applications for computers and microcomputers, it is almost
impossible to imagine a world without them. Common uses include
information storage, data processing and statistical analysis, word-
processing, accounting and financial forecasting, management
information systems, communications, etc.
There are many different careers in computing. Some require good
GCSEs(General Certificate of Secondary education) or an
intermediate GNVQ(General National Vocal Qualification); others
need qualifications of A level standard. Programmersdes, systems
igners, analysts, engineers and managers are likely to have degrees
or Higher National Diplomas.

WHAT IT TAKES?

 Good communication and social skills

 A logical mind

 A liking for problem solving

 The ability to work in a team

 A creative imagination

 The determination to meet deadlines

TYPICAL JOBS

 System Analysts and designers

 Software engineering and design

 Computer programmers

 End-user and technical support

 Computer sales

 Database controller/manager

 Network or communications manager

SYSTEM ANALYSTS AND DESIGNERS

 They investigate and analyze a business problem

 They design a suitable system to handle the problem
 They set up and test the system.
Systems analysts need to be good at extracting information
from people and getting ideas across to non-technical
personnel. They must also be able to persuade people that
what they are suggesting is the right solution - employees may
be sensitive about aspects of their jobs being taken over by
computers! Normally two or three years' experience of
programming is required. Moving in from a business
background is sometimes possible.
SOFTWARE ENGINEERING AND DESIGN
Some jobs in computing require a strong technical
background. These include those with the titles software
engineering, design and networking. People in these jobs
are likely to work on very complex, advanced software
used to control highly technological equipment and on
applications of programmes for business use. They need
to understand in detail how both the hardware and the
software work. Employers are software and hardware
manufacturers and large companies which use the
software.
