B LEAPNaturalSelection

The document discusses the scientific concepts of evolution, natural selection, adaptations, extinction, and species. It explains that natural selection is the process by which organisms with traits better suited to their environment are more likely to survive and reproduce, passing on those favorable traits. Over long periods of time, this process of natural selection can result in evolution, where organisms change and diversify into new species that are distinct from their ancestors. The document also defines a species as a group of organisms that can interbreed and produce fertile offspring.

Natural Selection

fossils reproduce traits

Scientists have known for a long time that life on Earth has been changing. One reason

they knew life was changing was the discovery of thousands of _____________________. The

fossils were of many organisms that had never been seen. _____________________ is when

organisms change over a long period of time. For many years people were trying to figure out

how evolution happened. Charles Darwin came up with the idea of natural selection. Natural

selection says that the organisms with the best ________________ will be able to survive and

__________________. Most of the babies will get the good traits from their parents.

Organisms with bad traits will die young and not reproduce or reproduce very little.

Natural selection told scientists how evolution happened. It works because there are

differences in a group of organisms. Just like people have different color hair, eyes, and skin.

The good traits that help an organism survive are called _________________________. If

none of the organisms can survive in its environment, they may become extinct.

___________________ means that there are no more organisms of the same type living.

Dinosaurs, wooly mammoths, and saber-tooth tigers are all extinct.

What Is a Species?

different species

A _________________ is a group of one type of animal that can breed (have babies) and

the babies can grow up to have babies. For example a dog and a wolf are the same species.

They can have babies and their babies can grow up and have babies. A horse and a donkey are

two __________________ species. They are very similar though and can have a baby (called a

mule), but that baby cannot have babies when it gets older.

Same Species
– Can have
grandbabies

Different Species
– Cannot have
grandbabies.
