Triac

The triac is a three terminal semiconductor device that can control current flowing in both directions, unlike an SCR which only conducts in one direction. It functions like two SCRs connected back-to-back, allowing current to flow when a positive gate voltage is applied regardless of the voltage polarity on the other terminals. Triacs are commonly used to control AC current in applications like light dimmers and motor speed controls.

TITLE : TRIAC

DEFINITION

The triac is a three terminal semiconductor device for controlling current. It is

effectively a development of the SCR or thyristor, but unlike the thyristor which is
only able to conduct in one direction, the triac is a biriectional device.

THEORY

 There are three terminal on a triac.

 These are the Gate and two other terminals.
 It can be imagined from the circuit symbol that the triac consists of two
thyristors back to back. The operation of the triac can be looked on in this
fashion, although the actual operation at the semiconductor level is rather
complicated. When the voltage on the MT1 is positive with regard to MT2 and
a positive gate voltage is applied, one of the SCRs conducts.

STRUCTURE AND SCHEMATIC SYMBOL

CHARACTERISTICS

 The circuit can be adjust.

 Combanation of TWO SCR.
 Current flow in two ways.
 TRIAC also consists P-types and N-types material.
 Also operate as off switch .
 Most application of Triac in circuits.

APPLICATION

 Most uses in controlling circuit current AC likes control the lamp bright and
control speed of motor.
 Can uses as good switching because the size more small, the speed better
and decrease in controlling current.
 Get control the flow of calls. When no current flows into the terminal gate, the
voltage reached a very high breakdownvoltage (VBR) must be supplied to
the terminal MT1 and MT2 regardless of polarity, to allow calls berkendali
(triac no terminal anode and cathode). The maximum voltage can be up
to 600V triac or more.

SUMMARY

The Triac is an electronic component that is widely used in many circuit applications.
Ranging from light dimmers thought to various forms of AC control. It is generally
only used the high power switching circuit.
