Why Can

This 3 stanza poem explores the difficulties of open communication and overcoming fear through honest sharing. While wanting to connect and support each other, underlying fears prevent being fully present and appreciating what is close at hand in the current moment. Reaching for what is ahead distracts from appreciating what is happening in the present.

Why can’t I say what I want you to hear?

You say you want to give, lend me your ear.

We would give all and yet cling to our fear.

We strive for beyond and forget what is near,

Holding to sorrow, we plead now for cheer

Reaching ahead, we step to the rear.
