SECTION A (50m)
1. Simplify the following:
a. 5.43 – 7.233 + 3.85 (To 2 decimal places) (2m)
b. 7.21 × 4.84 ÷ 2.2 (To 2 significant figures) (2m)
c. 14 ÷ 3 × 6 - 5 + 9 (2m)
d. (-10 – 4) +4(6 ÷ ⅔) (4m)

2. Compute the percentages:


a. Convert ⅛ to a percentage. (To 1 decimal place) (3m)
b. 60% of a number is 80. What is the number? (3m)
c. 1,200 runners entered the New York marathon. 15% of the runners were from Kenya, 20% of
the runners were female. How many male runners entered the race? (4m)

3. Simplify the following:


a. (x – 3y).(-3y – 3x) (4m)
b. -3(x + 2y).(2x + y) (4m)
c. (x + y).(4/x) (2m)

4. Solve for x:
a. 5x + 21 = 1 (2m)
b. -3x - 5 = 2x - 8 (4m)
c. 4x – 6 = 2x + 5 (4m)

5. Using ratios:
a. The top 3 students’ marks in an exam were in the ratio 3:4:5. There total marks were 240.
What were their individual marks? (4m)
b. Bunny, Hinn and Isaac received an inheritance from Moses - their grandfather. The total
amount of the inheritance was three million and five hundred thousand dollars ($3,500,000.00).
Bunny received ⅖, Hinn got half the amount bunny received and Isaac got the balance. How

6. Draw the following graphs represented by the linear equations below.

7. Using maths to solve everyday consumer problems:

a. Using simple interest compute the principal, if the total interest received is $4000, the rate of
interest is 15%, and the investment period was 3 years.
b. Jane deposited $3000 into a bank account and the annual interest rate is 5%. How much is the
interest after 4 years?
c. Find the sale price for an item that has a list price of 400 dollars and a discount rate of 25 %.
d. Jan 1st 2007, James bought a desktop computer for $6000. The depreciation rate is 25% on the
reduced balance. What is the Jan 1 st 2009 accumulated depreciation?
e. Hezekiah's bill for breakfast at a restaurant was $50 including the tip. He left a 10 % tip on the
cost of his breakfast. What was the cost of Hezekiah's breakfast, excluding the tip?
