Chapter 8 Combined Loading

This chapter discusses the analysis of thin-walled pressure vessels and combined loadings. It presents assumptions and equations for calculating hoop and longitudinal stress in cylindrical and spherical vessels due to internal pressure. Methods are described for analyzing the resultant stresses from multiple loadings such as normal force, shear force, bending moment, and torsional moment by using the principle of superposition. Several examples demonstrate applying these analysis techniques to problems involving pressure vessels and mechanical components under combined loading conditions.

REVIEW OF STRESS ANALYSES
Normal force P leads to:
uniform normal stress σ = P/A

Shear force V leads to:

shear-stress distribution τ = VQ/(It)
Bending moment M leads to:
longitudinal stress distribution σ = –My/I (for straight beam)

Torsional moment T leads to:

shear-stress distribution τ = Tρ/J (for circular shaft)

Resultant stresses by superposition:

Once the normal and shear stress components for each loading have been
calculated, use the principal of superposition to determine the resultant normal
and shear stress components.
