Alg1 Factoring Notes

This document provides notes on factoring quadratic trinomials in algebra 1. It explains that to factor a quadratic trinomial, you rewrite it without the middle term, look for factors of the constant term that add or subtract to the middle term, then rewrite and factorize the expression grouping like terms. As an example, it shows the steps to factor the expression 12x^2 + 4x - 5 by finding the factors of -60 that differ by 4, rewriting the expression and factoring into (6x + 5)(2x - 1).

Algebra 1: Factoring Quadratic Trinomials: Notes

Ex. Factor:

12 x 2 + 4 x − 5 let a = coefficient of x2
b = coefficient of x
c = constant

1. Rewrite the expression without the middle term:

12 x 2 −5

2. Look for middle term by multiplying a and c.

• a × c = (12)(-5) = -60
• factor -60 ; look for factors that when subtracted (since the product is negative)
will equal the middle term 4.
added when a × c = positive

Factors of -60 difference

60 1 59
30 2 28
20 3 17
15 4 11
12 5 7
10 (+) 6 (-) 4

3. Rewrite:

• Rearrange positive (+) for second half.

12 x 2 − 6 x + 10 x − 5

• Factor by grouping.
(12 x 2 − 6 x ) + (10 x − 5)
= 6 x ( 2 x −1) + (10 x −5)
= (6 x + 5)( 2 x −1)

Answer: The factors of 12 x 2 − 6 x + 10 x − 5 are (6 x + 5)( 2 x −1) .
