How We Express Ourselves

Central idea: Communication requires more than just words to be


effective.

Lines of inquiry:

- Effective ways of communication


- The importance of reflection

Learner Profile Focus: communicator- reflective- risk-taker

Attitudes Focus: respect- creativity- appreciation

Concepts: form, function, reflection

In this unit, the children will deepen their understanding of:

- Different media used for communication


- What makes communication effective
- Reflection and how to present things differently
- Effective communication skills e.g. posture, eye contact, voice
intonation
- Purposes of written texts and author’s voice
- The use of illustrations, print and figures of speech to convey
meaning
- The use of punctuation, speech marks and writers traits to convey
meaning
Throughout this unit, the children will inquire into different media of
communication such as music, movement, painting and drama. They will
be engaged in learning experiences through which they will use language
and different media to communicate ideas, thoughts and feelings

The children will choose suitable media that best fits the idea, thought
and or feeling which they will communicate to an audience of their peers.

How you can support your child’s learning at home:

o Discuss how music makes you feel and why.


o Share samples of creative arts (books, CDs, links, etc.)
o Discussing the pictures in story books and reflecting on the choice of
illustrations that goes with this book
o Help your child express her/his feelings by using emotive language
e.g. jealous, disappointed, and surprised.
o Encourage your child to use and notice the use of gestures and
body language when speaking
o Provide opportunities for children to use their imagination and
participate in role-play situations.
