Userguide

The document describes the Lidar Data Handler extension for ArcMap. It allows users to load and manipulate lidar and other grid data. Key functions include applying symbology from layer files, profiling grids, subtracting and clipping grids, and converting graphics to shapes. The extension is activated by downloading and installing the file, then enabling it in the Extensions menu in ArcMap.

Lidar Data Handler

What it Does
The available options are designed to help manipulate and display grids. Although it was
designed with digital elevation models (DEMs) and LIDAR data in mind, many of the
tools could also be used with other kinds of grid data.

Activating the LIDAR Data Handler in ArcMap

1. Unzip the downloaded file to a temporary location

2. Run the set-up program to install and register the extension and new functionality
to ArcMap
3. Start ArcMap
4. From the Tools menu, select Extensions. In the Extensions window, activate the
checkbox for the LIDAR Data Handler entry
5. Close the Extensions window
6. From the View menu, select the LIDAR Data Handler toolbar

A new toolbar entitled LIDAR Data Handler will be available for the ArcMap project.

Options

• Data Loader allows you to rename and load data files downloaded using the
LIDAR Data Retrieval Tool (LDART) into a map document within ArcMap.

There are two options for working with the legend:

• Apply LYR File Symbology applies the symbology stored within a layer file to
data layers within the active data frame that are the same type.
• Apply Symbology applies the symbology from a selected layer file within the
active data frame to other data layers within the data frame that are the same type.

Grid Profiler creates profiles or transects across selected grid themes.

There are three options used to manipulate and extract grid data:

• Grid Subtractor subtracts one grid from another.

• Cut/Fill Calculator is disabled for ArcMap 8.x because of invalid results
returned from the "cut/fill" command in ArcGIS. It calculates volume and area
gained and lost from a difference grid (such as one calculated by Grid Subtractor).
• Grid Clipper clips a grid by a selected polygon theme or graphic. This can be
useful if you want to calculate differences for a small section of your grid.

Graphic to Shape converts a selected graphic (perhaps one used to clip a grid) to a
polyline or polygon theme.
