Ruby L02 Planning and Developing For Animation
Ruby L02 Planning and Developing For Animation
for animation
By Ruby Smith
Initial
Ideas
To begin developing my
ideas i selected the
word ‘grow’ and
produced a mind map
linking the word grow to
different things relating
to it such as an
increase in size or
growing up.
Initial Ideas
In this section of the mind map I
have expanded on the initial
idea of growth and changing
size as well as exploring the
idea of plants and flowers
germinating and growing. I think
I will explore the idea of growth
further into my final piece as I
like the transition and the
changes that can be animated.
In this picture I have related
my work into films I’ve seen
that I can use for research
such as Alice in wonderland. I
also developed the idea of
something growing due to
eating or drinking a certain
thing. This would be easier to
animate using cut out
animation as opposed to white
board as there can be many
different elements to the
piece.
In this image I have focused
on change in shape through
development. Such as a
foetus in the womb. I think
this animation would be
difficult unless I used white
board as I’d have the ability
to erase and draw around the
design, changing it and
adapting it. If I used pixilation
it would be very difficult
moving and changing a set of
items.
In this slide I have looked
at size and growth, if I
was to animate a person
putting on weight I would
use whiteboard as I’d be
easier to draw a character
and it would look more
effective. You could also
use limited animation in
what they are eating and
use your hands to stretch
or screw the person.
This is my final
idea for my
animation
although this will
be difficult to
animate I think
that if I use a
series of acetate
sheets tracing
over the original
design each time
it should be fine.
The things that
will move will be
the dogs ears and
mouth. I am also
going to produce
another scene
showing his body
also.

Storyboard
I used my
storyboard to
clearly show each
scene and
significant
movements in the
animation. This
was useful as I
could see what i
needed to capture
and what It is a
very basic sketch
of each movement.
Test Animation
I did a test animation to test the movement of the dogs, walking and how easy or
hard the acetate was to move around. I liked the technique of layering acetate but I
needed to check whether the transparency changes the more acetate I layered. My
test animation was only 20 seconds or so long, only long enough to get a slight
taster of what the actual animation would take to make. I also tested the stillness of
the camera on the tripod. I learnt many things over the term to help that have
helped towards successfully designing my final animation such as the use of
limited animation techniques and fade out techniques.
• Sound
• I decided to use a music track as my background, I wanted
something chilled out but not relating to the actual animation. So I
decided to use a band called wavves who are a noise pop band
from california. I also think the music fits in really well with the
animation beat wise.
how/why I changed plans
• The problems I found were that the animation took so long to capture and the movement of the
acetate was especially hard when moving the dogs legs so they walk along the page. I tried to
move the paper underneath the acetate along rather than the acetate itself to make it quicker and
look better. The acetate slipped and I had to reshoot it, so I decided to animate it the long way by
moving each body part so it could walk. The lighting was also really difficult, as there is only one
lamp I had to improvise by covering the walls with paper so stop the light reflecting into the
actate. I decided to use different music also as I wanted a more chilled out tone rather than using
dog barking noises in fear I’d look fake.
