Presentation 3 - EngB

The document discusses the issue of whether live-in relationships should be equated to marriage in India. It presents arguments both for and against this position. The main arguments against equating live-in relationships to marriage are that marriage is seen as a more eternal and committed relationship in Indian culture and traditions. Live-in relationships may harm those commitments as research suggests couples who cohabitate before marriage have higher divorce rates and lower marital satisfaction. There are also concerns about a lack of commitment and the well-being of any children from such relationships. However, arguments for equating them note that live-in relationships can allow couples to better prepare for lifelong commitment by learning how they deal with problems together. It can

Presentation 3:
Should live-in relationships be equated to marriage in India?

Against: NO RELATIONSHIP CAN EVER BE EQUATED WITH A RELATIONSHIP AS ETERNAL AS MARRIAGE.

- Indians cannot imitate Westerns because of culture and traditions.
- When women’s prime is gone, no one will want to live-in with them, leaving them
with one child or more.
- Legalizing live-in relationships is close to legalizing prostitution. (?)
- India does not take care for the old and lonely people.
- People within the relationship will be less faithful, will have less respect and trust for
each other than in marriages.
- There is some research suggesting that couples who cohabitate are not as happy as
married couples (Source: USA Today).
- Living-in harms marriage
o Social scientists have found that:
 People who lived together before marriage had a higher rate of
divorce than those who did not live together.
 People who lived together before marriage had more negative
communication in their marriages than those who did not live
together.
 People who lived together before marriage had lower levels of marital
satisfaction than those who did not live together.
o Live-in relationships don’t make an attempt to compromise and
accommodate to each other’s life because they don’t have a lifelong
commitment.
o Men who had lived with a woman before tend to be less dedicated to their
wives.
o Different approaches of men and women may cause conflicts which can ruin
the whole relationship.
 Men: I get to sleep with you every night and clean place to live with no
worry about future.
 Women: Our relationship is moving to the next level, it is going
somewhere.
- Lack of premarital agreements between the two parties (financial matters).
- Increases the lack of commitment, disrespect of social bonds and lack of tolerance in
relationships.

For:
- Run away from responsibilities, be free and independent.
- Preparation for lifelong commitment, sharing everything.
- The couple has a chance to get to know each other more, day-by-day habits, whether
they can deal with financial and family problems for a lifetime.
- Give women liberty even within long-term relationships.
- Women want to avoid failed marriages.
