Boiler Formulas

Common Conversion Factors

Boiler HP x 34.5 = Lbs. of Steam per Hour
Boiler HP x .069 = Evaporation Rate Gallons per Minute (GPM)
Boiler HP x 33.4 = MBTU per Hour Output (MBH)
Boiler HP x 139 = Sq. Feet of Equivalent Direct Radiation (EDR)
BTU/Hour Output ÷ 240 = Sq. Feet of Equivalent Direct Radiation (EDR)
EDR/1000 x 0.5 = Evaporation Rate Gallons per Minute (GPM)
Lbs of Steam /Hr ÷ 500 = Evaporation Rate Gallons per Minute (GPM)

Condensate Pump Sizing

Evaporation Rate x 3 = Pump GPM Required
Pump GPM x 1 = Receiver Tank Size (Gallons Storage)
SUPPORT LINKS
Honeywell Example: 2,400,000 output boiler ÷ 240 = 10,000 EDR
Fireye 10,000 EDR ÷ 1000 ÷ 2 = 5 GPM
5 GPM x 3 = 15 GPM pump capacity
15 GPM x 1 = 15 gallon tank

HELPFUL LINKS Boiler Feed Unit Sizing

Thomas Register Evaporation Rate x 1.85 = Pump GPM Required
Hester-Bradley Evaporation Rate x 20 = Receiver Tank Size (Gallon Storage @ 20
minutes)
ABMA
Rule of Thumb: Use one gallon of storage per boiler horsepower.

Example: 3,347,900 output boiler ÷ 33,479 = 100 BHP

100 BHP x .069 = 6.9 GPM
6.9 GPM x 1.85 = 12.7 Pump GPM Req.
6.9 GPM x 20 = 138 Gallons Storage

Debco Equipment Co., Determining Existing Tank Capacity
Inc 2003
Square Tank Volume = H" x W" x L" ÷ 231 = Gallons Capacity
Round Tank Volume = R" x R" x 3.141 x L" ÷ 231 = Gallons Capacity

H is height, W is width, L is length, R is radius

Circulation Pump Sizing

BTU = 500 x GPM x ^T

GPM = BTU ÷ 500 x ^T
^T = BTU ÷ 500 x GPM
^T is the change in temperature
