Lesson 02

This document provides instructions for creating a frequency distribution in Minitab using the variable "LostDays" from the dataset "BACKPAIN.MTW". It explains how to use the "Stat > Tables > Tally Individual Variables" tool to produce a frequency table showing the counts for each value of LostDays. It notes that Minitab does not have an easy way to create grouped frequency distributions, which will be demonstrated in Lesson 3. The document also includes instructions for two assignments asking students to create frequency distributions for other variables from different datasets.

LESSON 2 - FREQUENCY DISTRIBUTION

Open Minitab and worksheet

\BACKPAIN.MTW. (See RETRIEVING
A WORKSHEET on page 4 in Lesson 1.)
Clear everything below the date/time stamp
then type your name, Lesson 2,and
Example on separate lines below the
date/time stamp.
We would like to create a frequency
distribution for the variable LostDays.
Click on Stat > Tables > Tally Individual
Variables. Select C3 LostDays into the
Variables: box. Below the Variables: box
we see a list of results that can be
displayed. "Counts" is what our text calls
"frequency", "Percents" are what our text calls
Tally for Discrete Variables: LostDays
"relative frequency" except that Minitab
expresses them as percents rather than as LostDays Count
decimal fractions. The other two are running 0 125

totals of the first two. You may check any 1, 2, 2 8
3 or all four of the boxes, but for this example 3 14
let us just choose the default, "Counts". Your 4 10
5 5
dialog box should look like the top figure to the 6 5
right. You can now click "OK" and the 7 8
frequency distribution for "Lost Days" will 8 3

appear in the session window as in the figure to 10 5
the right. 11 1
Unfortunately, Minitab does not have 13 1

an easy way to create grouped frequency 15 1
distributions. In Lesson 3 we will see a 16 1
roundabout way to get the grouped frequencies. 17 1

MINITAB ASSIGNMENT 2

See instructions on page 8 of Lesson 1.

1. Open the Worksheet Bears.MTW in K:\minitab15\MINITAB\MiniTab.

Create a frequency distribution for the variable C3 Month.

2. Open the Worksheet EMail.MTW in K:\minitab15\MINITAB\MiniTab\Studnt14.

Create a relative frequency distribution for the variable C4 Out.
