I hear you, it's not that simple. Overcoming music performance anxiety or overcoming stage fright, as it is
sometimes called, requires knowledge and taking the right steps. When you start "owning" your
performance anxiety, music and the concept of "playing" or "performing" will begin to make whole new
sense to you.
Whenever you get up on that stage, to do your thing and play some music, anxiety starts running the show.
Your brain is releasing unpleasant chemicals in your body. You’re shaking. Your fingers are weak. You can't
perform. Only wait for the nightmare to end. That's music performance anxiety in a nutshell!
However, i believe that overcoming performance anxiety is possible. In fact, very doable. As you will see, if
you read on, I have done it myself. But let’s begin with your story...
Does the piano ever scare you? How can YOU start overcoming Music
Performance Anxiety?
Feeling unsure about yourself and your musical talent? Are you thinking about joining a band, doing a
performance or taking music lesson, but you’re not sure if you’re "good enough" or “have what it
takes”? ...please read on….
I think most people know that unpleasant feeling of self-doubt creeping up on them, until they're suddenly
somewhat paralyzed and out of touch with reality…I felt like that for many years as a young musician. I was
talented, but for some reason I never “felt” talented.
Luckily I found a way to strip of that layer of insecurity, get up on that stage and start to enjoy myself.
Today i feel blessed to know and play with many great musicians in my home town and i have
comprehensive live experience, playing at everything from big stages with thousands of people to small
weddings and student parties.
On top of that i get regular calls to be a stand in with various cover bands, generating some nice extra
income and adding more great musical experiences to my life.
So, how did I get to this point? I can surely say that i no longer suffer from performance anxiety. How did I
do it? And just as important, how can you do the same? This is the short version of what I did...
I kept pushing myself. I went out at night to jam with the Pro’s at local jam sessions. I started to help
friends auditioning for the conservatory in my city, performing in front of judges and getting used to
the audience attention.
I began taking lessons with a great piano teacher who taught me the difference between
“performing” and “practicing”. Big difference! And being aware of this makes "playing" so much
easier and so much more fun… Soon I began accepting paid gig’s and I did a solo performance in front
of 200 people at my college.
From there on teaching started to grab my attention and I’ve been focused mostly on that since (still
playing the occasional gig once in a while, to keep myself in shape and have some fun)…I’m rambling
on here
Reality is that you CAN make your musical dreams come true, If you're willing to put in enough practice and
be honest and authentic in your pursues…it’s possible to eliminate performance anxiety.
When and If you know the right steps to take

What if piano is not your instrument?
Try me out...music performance anxiety is not restricted to piano players only. It's tied to NOT
UNDERSTANDING what it means to "perform". Performing is a SKILL that can be learned. To some it even
becomes an art. The art of performance, the art of improvising, the art of playing in the moment!
Being in the moment and letting creativity flow naturally is an ongoing pursuit to most accomplished
musicians...
