Sequential Compression Device: Michelle Natrop Spring 2010

An intermittent compression device (ICD) is used for hospitalized patients at moderate to high risk of deep vein thrombosis or pulmonary embolism. It applies intermittent external pressure to the lower extremities to push blood from superficial to deep veins, decreasing stasis and increasing blood flow to enhance fibrinolysis. Correct placement and patient compliance are needed for the ICD to be effective, and it should not be used if the patient has an active DVT due to risk of pulmonary embolism. Patients may also receive anticoagulation treatment.

Intermittent Compression Device
• ICD
– Hospitalized patients at moderate high, of very
high risk for DVT or PE
– Can be used with antiembolitic stockings
– Apply intermittent external pressure to the lower
extremities
– Pushes blood from the superficial veins into the
deep veins decreasing stasis
– Increased blood flow enhances fibinolysis
ICD
• Correct placement is needed to be effective
• Patient compliance is needed to be effective
• Not to be worn if patient has an active DVT
due to risk of PE
• Patients may also receive anticoagulation
