Medium of Sound

The document describes the medium through which sound waves travel. It states that sound waves are longitudinal waves that require a medium, such as air, to transmit energy from one place to another. An activity is described where students use a rope to demonstrate how sound travels more clearly through a solid medium than through air alone. The document also provides exercises about the properties of sound waves, including how frequency and amplitude relate to pitch and loudness.

Conclusion
• The sound that has a low frequency is
more clearly to be heard if travels in
the rope (solid) than in the air
Exercise
1. What is sound?
2. Sound waves are………………waves
3. Explain briefly how sound wave is
created and transmitted!
4. Write down the wave equation relating
speed of sound wave to the wavelength
of sound wave and the frequency of the
source
5. These terms can be used to describe
sound waves
I. Match the terms correctly to show how
each can effect the other

Pitch loudness

Amplitude Frequency
II. Write two statement to describe how the
term affects each other

6. Astronaut are in space station orbiting

the moon. They see an explosion on the
surface of the moon. Explain why they
cannot hear the explosion?
Answer
1. Sound is the produces of something that
vibrate
2. Sound waves are longitudinal waves
3. Sound wave is create by disturbance, the
disturbance causes object to vibrate, As
the object vibrates, it pushes and pulls on
the surrounding air molecules, causing
alternating layer of air at higher and lower
pressures. A higher pressure region is
called compression while lower pressure
region is called rarefaction. These layers
of air propagate outwards in all direction
from the vibrating source, carrying with it
energy. So it is clear that a medium is
needed for sound wave to be transmitted
4.Speed of sound wave =
Frequency of vibrating source x wavelength

V= f x ∩
5. I. Pitch ---------- Frequency
Loudness ----------- Amplitude

II. When frequency increases, pitch

increases , when amplitude increases ,
loudness increases
6. Sound cannot travel through a vacuum.
