What Is Zigbee?

ZigBee is a wireless standard used for monitoring and control applications that require low data rates and long battery life. It operates in the 2.4GHz frequency band and uses mesh networking to connect thousands of low-power sensors and devices. Common uses of ZigBee include home automation, building automation, and smart energy applications. ZigBee provides long battery life, multiple network topologies, encryption, and supports over 65,000 nodes per network.

What is ZigBee?

 Technological Standard Created for Control and

Sensor Networks
 Based on the IEEE 802.15.4 Standard
 Used in monitoring and control i.e traffic controlling
and vehicle identification.
History of zigBee:-
 ZigBee network began to concieved about 1998 when
many installer realised that both WiFi and Bluetooth
were going to unstable for many application.
 In summer of 2003 ,philips semiconductor.a major
mesh network supporter ,ceased the investment.
 The zigBee alliance announced in october 2004 and
had grown to more than 100 member companies ,in 22
counteries.
Uses of ZigBee :-
 Home Automation (power sensor, access sensor)

 ZigBee smart energy(lower power consumption,low

duty cycle)

 Commercial building automation(energy

monitoring,lighting etc)
ZigBee features:-
 Low duty cycle-provide long battery life.
 Support for multiple network topologies:star, mesh.
 Upto 65000 nodes on a network.
 128-bit encryption –provide secure connection.
 Collision avoidance.
ZigBee Frequencies
 Operates in Unlicensed Bands
 ISM 2.4 GHz Global Band at 250kbps
 868 MHz European Band at 20kbps
 915 MHz North American Band at 40kbps
ZigBee Products
 Development Kits
 Sensors
 Transceivers
 Modules

Comparision with Bluetooth
 ZigBee Bandwidth is ¼ as compared to bluetooth.
 Its cater to the sensors and remote controls and
consume low power than any other wireless device.
 Transmission range is about 1 to 100(meter)
 Fully relaible “hand –shaked” data transfer protocol as
compared to bluetooth.
