The use of quotation marks, also called inverted commas, is

slightly complicated by the fact that there are two types—single (‘

’) and double (“ ”), and two styles—British and American. In the
British style, single quotes denote quoted speech, and double
quotes indicate a quotation within quoted speech. The American
style adopts the reverse.
Here are some basic rules to help you quote it right, British style!
Usage
Example
To enclose direct quotations (reporting
exactly what was said) after any other
punctuation
JPMC CTO James Young

reputable firm, high on integrity

To enclose a quotation within a quotation
The DCH said, ‘TRDDC is a
pioneer, as the CEO Ramadorai
aptly noted, “TRDDC is an
affirmation of TCS's pioneering
leadership in the Indian IT
industry.” ’
To indicate words used ironically, with
reservation, or in some unusual way
He claimed he was ‘too busy’ to

and to set off terms, mottos, coined words
La date limite, ‘the deadline’.
To refer to the title of a written work
‘Research by Design: Innovation
and TCS’ is a compilation of

TCS.
To explain technical or unfamiliar words. But,
note that such words are italicised.
The English word encrypt comes
from a Greek word meaning
‘hidden’.
Remember, quotation marks are like twins—they always come in pairs!
