This document provides instructions for a selective breeding display assignment. Students will create two parent animals with known genotypes, where one parent is homozygous recessive and the other is homozygous dominant. They will produce 4 offspring with visible phenotypes and genotypes. Students must include Punnett squares showing the crosses. Higher grades will be given for more complex crosses that include dihybrid crosses showing two traits, F1 and F2 generations, and professionally presented displays. Possible monogenic traits to use include long vs short legs, brown vs orange spots, erect vs floppy ears, wrinkled vs smooth face, and long vs cropped tail.

SELECTIVE BREEDING DISPLAY
You will show your understanding of basic genetics by creating a “situation”
where 2 parent animals with known genotypes (must be one homozygous recessive parent and one homozygous dominant parent) produce 4 offspring. You will create the parents and offspring from a choice of media, paint and paper, clay, or ……get creative! You must produce 4 offspring (babies) with known genotypes and obvious phenotypes. You must produce punnett squares for the crosses. You can work with a partner.
Naturally, those with professional looking displays will get more points!
For a C…………1 trait with 2 parents and 4 offspring + punnett square
For a B ……….dihybrid cross…2 parents, 4 offspring + punnett square
For an A…….. F1 and F2 generations, that means offspring and their 4 babies. (8 offspring in all)
Possible Traits…….All Parents Must Be HOMOZYGOUS
Long Legs (L) dominant to Short Legs (l)
Brown Spots (B) dominant to Orange Spots (b) Erect Ears (E) dominant to Floppy Ears (f) Wrinkled Face (R) dominant to Smooth Face (r) Long Tail (T) dominant to Cropped Tail (t)
