To begin with, as the subject of this paper if ³Paradise Lost´ by John Milton, it was
published in 1667 and is considered the finest work of John Milton. ³Paradise Lost´ is a
poem in 12 books whose subject if the Christian story of ³man¶s first disobedience,´
temptation and fall and the promise of redemption by ³one greater man´ - - Jesus Christ.
The poem, which draws on Milton¶s profound knowledge of Greek, Latin, and Hebrew
tradition, offers its majestic style and subject as a Christian alternative to the pagan
heroism of classic epic. Adam is Milton¶s hero, Satan is adversary. The poem begins with
an invocation of the ³heavenly muse´; which describes Satan¶s expulsion from Heaven
and the war of the angels, the building of Hell, and the creation of Satan¶s offspring, sin
and death; and concludes with the sorrowful departure of Adam and Eve from paradise.
The poem explains an entire theology. It is about the coming of sin into the world
through the temptation of Adam and Eve by Satan after his defeat in Heaven. If nothing
has justified the ways of God to man, all our questions about our relationship to God
should be answered...
