INTERNET

(Powered by
Yahoo!)
What is the internet?
 The Internet, or simply the Net, is a collection
of computer networks that links millions of
different computers around the world. A
computer network is a group of connected
computers that exchange information. Once
your computer is connected to the Internet,
you can “travel” to any of the millions of the
computers that are hooked up to the Internet,
computers that might be thousand of miles
away.
Example
 An Internet-user in Manila, for example, can
get the information he needs from another
computer that is located in Tokyo. An
individual in London can send e-mail and be
confident that it will reach his friend in Canada
in minutes or less. A child in New York can
chat on-line with her Mom who is working in
Moscow at real time without paying long
distance charges.
Internet Services
 E-mail (Electronic Mail) – enables us to send
and receive messages through e-mail all over
the world.

 Information – you can access any information

on any subject through the Internet. That is
why Internet is now a very important tool for
research works and educational purposes.
Internet Services
 Group Discussion – we can meet people around the
globe with similar taste and preferences. Common
topics of interest can be discussed. Subjects such as
music, religion, politics, sports, etc… can be an
interesting way to meet some new friends.

 News – news from CNN, NBC, ABS-CBN or from

your national newspaper can be assessed through the
Internet.
Internet Services
 Entertainment – the Internet offers thousands
of sites where you can watch your favorite
celebrity. You can also have a good browse of
what’s showing tonight, current movie reviews
and t.v. schedules.

 Free Programs (Software) – you can

download thousands of shareware/freeware
from the Internet.
Internet Services
 On Line Shopping – we can order desired
goods and services on the Internet in the
comforts of our home.

 Internet Relay Chat – enables a group of

people, usually using aliases or “screen
names”, to send typed messages, and even
allow audio conversations to another in real
time across hundred miles.
What are the Internet Addresses?
For example, the URL address http://
www.friendster.com/profiles provides the following
information:

http This Web server uses the http protocol.

www This site is on the World Wide Web.
Friendster The name of the host is Friendster.
.com (in this example) A commercial organization.
Profiles This is the web’s actual document.
Search Engines and Directories
There are various search engines on the
net:
Google
Yahoo
Lycos
MSN
