Install Linux on Windows XP
If you have a dedicated PC to install Linux you can skip this section.
1. Download VirtualBox at http://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Downloads
(As of May 10,2010, 3.1.8)
2. Set up the Virtual box.

Select all default. After install and run it will look like this.

3. In VirtualBox, click New

Memory select 512M, (if you use Fedora live CD you might need 1G of ram,
Make sure your Windows system has enough ram).
Virtual Hard Disk, Select “Create New Hard disk”, For “Storage type” select
“Dynamically expanding storage”,

Select next all the way and it will look like this.

4. Configure the network. In above picture, click settings. Select Network.


Select “Bridged Adapter” then click OK.

5. Download one Linux (Fedora 10 is used in here).

Either burn CD or use CD emulator.

6. Install Linux, Click Start on VirtualBox.

Select the CD(DVD) of Linux and start install.

You can also select “Media Source” from an iso file.

follow the instruction and complete the installation of Fedora. Create a root
password
Select the install type. The installation might take quite a while.

After installation it will ask you to reboot.

Click “Forward”. Create a user and password. You now have a working Linux.
7. Install the guest additions. http://www.dedoimedo.com/computers/virtualbox-
guest-addons.html. (This is optional).
8. Set up Samba server. http://www.howtoforge.com/samba-fileserver-with-swat-
fedora8.
