Field Hockey Speech

Field hockey is an invasion game played between two teams of 14 players each. There are several key rules including the foot rule where contact with an opponent's foot results in a free hit, and lines where the ball goes out of bounds. Violations in the striking circle result in a penalty corner or stroke. A penalty corner allows another shot at goal where only four defenders can be inside the goal. A stroke is a one on one between the shooter and goalkeeper from the seven yard mark. The speaker chose to discuss field hockey because they are passionate about the sport and believe it deserves more recognition globally.

Field hockey speech

Good morning, the topic I have chosen is Field Hockey

Field hockey is an invasion game meaning that there are both

offensive and defensive teams. A team is made up of usually
fourteen players, ten field players a goal keeper and three reserves.
The three reserves are made up of two field players and an alternate
goal keeper if needed.

There are a few main rules in hockey. The first and biggest is the foot
rule. This rule occurs when the ball makes contact with any field
player excluding the goal keepers. This results in the opposite teams
free hit.

The next rule is the out or line rule, this rule is put in place when the
ball goes outside the line or boundary. The penalty is against the
team who last touched the ball. A free hit from the boundary is
awarded to the other team.

If any of these rules are violated in the Striking circle this results in a
penalty corner or stroke.

A penalty corner is when the attacking team gets another shot at

scoring, their players stand around the striking circle and the ball is
pushed out by a team member, the ball must go outside the striking
circle then they have a shot at goal. The person shooting can either
drag flick or hit the ball, although when the ball is hit it has to be
lower than the back board which is only about 40cm high.

The defending team have only four players and a goal keeper which
start inside the goal and then have to try and defend the goal.

A Stoke occurs when there is a penalty behind the goal keeper and in
the path of a goal. It is a one on one with the goal keeper. The ball is
placed on the seven yard spot and has to be pushed or flicked into
the goal. The Goal keeper has to start on the base line inside the
goals.

There are three main types of fields hockey can be played on. The
first and best is Water-based Astroturf, the second is Sand-based
Astroturf, and the last is finely cut grass.

There are four main pieces of equipment needed to play hockey

these being a hockey stick, shin guards, a mouthguard and shoes
with grip.

Like most sports there are some forms of penalty when a player does
something wrong whether it be, misconduct or playing dangerously.
In Field Hockey there are three coloured cards, the first and most
commonly used is the Green Card which is a warning. The Yellow
Card when given to a player they have to sit out for the 5 minutes
without being replaced by another player. The last and most feared
card is the Red one. When this card is used the player is sent of
immediately and will have to face judiciary, they will decide the
consequences.

I chose Field Hockey for my speech because this is a game I am very

passionate about and I think it should be more widely known around
the world. All up I think that is a great sport and if u have the
opportunity to try it take it you won’t regret it.
