Design of An Adaptive Filter With A Dynamic Structure For Ecg Signal Processing

This document describes a method for designing an adaptive filter with a dynamic structure for ECG signal processing. The filter uses an LMS adaptive algorithm to produce the desired signal by adapting its filter coefficients. However, the filter output error cannot be minimized without properly selecting the filter order. The proposed method dynamically adapts the filter order based on the difference between errors during consecutive convergences. If the difference is large, the order is reduced, and if small, the order is increased. Simulation results show the dynamic structure adaptive filter performs better than a normal LMS filter at minimizing noise in ECG signals.

1.INTRODUCTION
 ECG is the most vital information signal used to
diagnose patient.
 ECG signal generated due to the contraction and
relaxation of the heart is measured using
Electrocardiograph.
 Noise in ECG signal

. 60hz power line noise

. Due to respiration
. Movement of electrode during measurement
CONT’D
 Since this Biomedical signals is time varying LMS
adaptive filter is used.
2.LMS ADAPTIVE FILTERS
 LMS adaptive filter produces the desired signal by
adapting the filter coefficients with LMS algorithm
based on given filter order.

 Filter output error cannot be set to the minimal value

without proper selection of Filter order.
 In order to solve this problem we need to adapt filter
order with trial error method and readapt.
3.LMS ADAPTIVE FILTER WITH
DYNAMIC STRUCTURE.
 As the adaptation count increases, error slowly
decreases.
 When the adaptation limit is reached, the convergence is

Where p is period of ECG signal.

ΔΕ is difference between error in previous convergence
and current convergence.
ORDER OF THE FILTER
 The convergence of the LMS adaptive filter can be understood
from below equation which shows the difference in the filter
coefficients.

 Where L is the order of the filter.

 current filter coefficient.
 If change of filter coefficient is large, filter order is converged to
small number.
 And if difference is small filter order is increased.
 Gain noise is given by:

 Cross correlation between Š(n) and estimate noise Ň(n)

is given by
CONDITION:

 We decide to adjust the filter order under the following

condition

ß=0.01, Rd=1
RESULTS:
CONCLUSION

 From the shown figures we can see that the performance

of dynamic structure Adaptive filter is better than normal
LMS filter.
 Therefore we can expect a better performance.
