Alexander Dumas

Synopsis:
Young Edmond Dantes was the first mate of the s.s.
Pharaoh owned by kindly Monsieur Morel. He was about
to marry sweetheart Mercedes when he was arrested on a
charge of carrying a secret. Missive from the exiled
emperor Napoleon on the island of Elba. Three men
conspired to ruin him: Danglars, a banker; Fernand, a
French official; and Villefort, a cabinet member.

Edmond was imprisoned at the chateau d’If for

14 years. He became acquainted with aged Abbe Faria,
who had dug a hole to Edmond’s cell. The abbe showed
and later gave him an old map of the island of Monte
Cristo where vast wealth was hidden. When Abbe Faria
died, Edmond escaped by placing himself inside the
abbe’s burial sack which was thrown into the sea, then
he extricated himself. He worked with smugglers

him in Monte Cristo
Island supposedly with a broken leg.

Edmond found gold, jewelry and

precious stones that made him rich like a nabob. He
returned to France, styled himself Count of Monte
Cristo, spent lavishly and revenged himself on the
men who had ruined him. His sweetheart Mercedes
who had married Fernand turned penitent.

The Count helped Monsieur Morel, his former

employer, by restabilising his banking business. He helped
Morel’s son marry Villefort’s daughter. Everything settled,
he sailed to parts unknown on his own ship with Haydee, a
foreign princess who loved him.

Reaction:
“God will give me justice,” this line which was
engraved in the wall on the prison was retained on my
mind when I read the story” The Count of Monte
Cristo.” This story amazed me very much because of its
excellent theme.
I really like the story because it has a mixed of
drama, suspense and romance. Furthermore, it was not
a boring one to read. There is adventure, mystery,
romance, sudden wealth and vengeance in this Dumas
novel.
After I read the story, I remember the two novelsSubmitted by:
of Rizal because it has some similarities. Examples
were the following; when Ibarra was abducted and Mikee Charlene M. Suede.
imprisoned, the unending love for Maria Clara, and in
El Filibusterismo where Ibarra disguised as Simoun and
plotted for revenge also.

I am so glad that I chose this story as my book

report because through this story I learned that trials are
not the reasons to give up but inspirations to move on.
