USF Green Light considers LED bulbs to be an emerging technology breakthrough similar to Edison's light bulb centuries ago. LED bulbs are extremely energy efficient, using up to 90% less energy than incandescent bulbs. They have a long lifetime of over 100,000 hours, are shock resistant, and do not contain mercury, making them more sustainable and cost effective than other bulbs over time. LEDs offer advantages like various light colors, small sizes, focused light, and lower heat emission.

Live LED bulbs
Why switch to LED?
Light Emitting Diode – LED bulbs, are extremely energy-efficient. They are solid bulbs that have revolutionized lighting using only a fraction of the electricity that incandescent light bulbs use.
Advantages:
More efficient – up to 90% less energy
used translates into smaller power supply required. Long service life – lifetimes can exceed 100,000 hours, far longer than typical incandescent light bulbs. Cost-effective – over time the best value because maintenance and replacement costs are expensive. Shock resistant – LEDs are solid and do not have a filament, they are difficult to damage with external shock unlike incandescent bulbs which are fragile. Color – LEDs can emit light of an intended color without using any color filters as traditional lighting methods need. Size - LEDs can be very small (smaller than 2 mm2) and are easily populated onto printed circuit boards. Focus – LEDs can be designated to focus their light unlike incandescent light bulbs that require an external reflector. Cool light – LEDs do not radiate too much heat in the form of infrared light that can damage fabrics. Low toxicity – LEDs do not contain mercury. Light for remote areas - because of their low power requirement, LEDs may be used with solar panels. Sustainable - saving on electricity reduces CO2 emissions, sulfur oxide and high-level nuclear waste.
