This document provides a checklist of grass species found in the Dabchick Wildlife Reserve and Conservancy. It lists 254 species of grasses with their botanical and common English and Afrikaans names. For each species, it indicates their palatability for grazing, grazing value, ecological status in plant succession, typical habitat, and comments. Many of the species are increasers that indicate disturbed or degraded lands. A few key species that are palatable decreasers and indicate good veld condition are also listed.

NOTE: Decreaser: Decreases with over or undergrazing


1 Increaser: Abundant in underutilized veld - usually unpalatable and robust climax grasses. E.g. Thatch grasses
2 increaser: Abundant in overgrazed veld - usually pioneers in lower rainfall areas. E.g. Natal red-top, Saw-tooth Love grass
3 increaser: Abundant in overgrazed veld - usually unpalatable dense climax grasses in higher rainfall areaE.g. Rats-taildropseed, Snowflake grass & Wire grass
