Desktop – the entire window that fills your computer screen and its contents.

Taskbar – appears at the bottom of the Windows desktop and used to launch and
manage programs that are currently running.

Shortcuts – represent links to resources on a PC.

Icon – tiny graphic that represents an object such as programs and folders.

Pointer – a small graphic that moves in reaction to mouse movement.

Start Button – permanent feature of the taskbar; click it to open Start Menu.

Start Menu – contains shortcuts for launching programs and opening folders.

Quick Launch Bar – special section at the left end of the taskbar where you can add
icons for the purpose of quickly starting programs.

Minimize button - hides a window so that only the program button on the taskbar
remains visible.

Maximize button - enlarges a window so that it fills the entire screen.

Restore button - reduces the window so that it is smaller than the entire screen.

Windows Explorer - is a program included with Windows XP that is designed to simplify


file management tasks.

Window – a rectangular frame where a running program may appear.

Active Window – the window that is currently in use.

Task Switching – the process of moving from one open window to another. One way to
toggle between applications is to use ALT+TAB keys on the keyboard.

Task Manager – sometimes an application freezes up and you need to terminate this
process without having to reboot. Method to get the Windows Task Manager is to press
CTRL+ALT+DELETE keys.

My Computer – is an icon on the desktop represents your computer, its storage


devices, printers, and other objects.

Control Panel - is a window that contains specialized tools you use to change the way
Windows looks and behaves.

My Documents –default location where you can store letters, reports, and other kinds of
documents.

Recycle Bin - is an area on your hard drive that holds deleted files until you remove
them permanently.
