EE321 Fourier Transform Sample Problems

This document provides sample problems for an EE321 Fourier Transform course. It includes 5 problems: [1] analyzing the Fourier series of a computer clock signal, [2] finding Fourier series coefficients, [3] determining orthogonality of signal pairs, [4] using Fourier transform properties to solve for transforms, and [5] using Fourier coefficients to generate signals. Students are instructed to show work and use limited study guides.

EE321 Fourier Transform Sample Problems

Summer 2005

Instructor: Kefu Xue, Ph.D.

Instructions: You are permitted to use a self-prepared study-guide limited to two (8 12 ” × 11”) page (both sides). Show
all the intermediate steps for credits.

1. Given a 200MHz TTL (5 V) computer clock (50% duty cycle) signal v(t) as shown in following figure,

(a) find its exponential Fourier series representation and sketch the magnitude and phase spectrum up to its 5th
harmonic frequencies.
(b) find the partial power of the signal up to 5th harmonic frequencies and calculate the percentage of the partial
power out of the total average power of the signal.
(c) Write down the expression using the signal components up to 5th harmonic frequencies. Find the error energy
of the approximation and find the percentage of error out of the total average power of the signal.

2. For a periodic signal f(t) = 2 + 4 cos(20πt − 2) + sin(60πt) + 4 cos(80πt), find all the exponential Fourier series
coefficients Cn ’s. (Hint: using Fourier series recognition).
3. Show that if the following pairs of periodic signals, x(t) and f(t) are orthogonal or not.

x(t) = ejkω0 t and f (t) = ejnω0 t where n = k

4. Find the Fourier transform and inverse Fourier transform (show your steps of derivations):
1
(a) Given the Fourier transform pairs e−at u(t) ⇐⇒ a+jω (Table 4.1(1)), find Fourier transform of
i. f (t) = 3e−3t u(t − 2) using time shift property
ii. x(t) = f (t) ∗ cos(4t) using frequency shift property
(b) Given the Fourier transform pairs rect( τt ) ⇐⇒ τ sin c( ωτ
2 ) (Table 4.1(17)), find inverse Fourier transform of
Y (ω) = rect( 3ω−9π
6 ) using duality (symmetry) property. And sketch functions y(t) and Y (ω).

5. Given the following sets of exponential Fourier coefficients of real signals, find the signal expression in time domain
and plot the signals in Matlab.

ω 0 = 10π rad./sec., C0 = 1, C2 = −2j, C−5 = 1 + j 3
