sister of Phil Dhoncha Eoin O'Sullivan, Canfie (who
was married in Canfie to Maria O'Mahony) and of
Cait Dhoncha Eoin O'Sullivan who married in
Faunleave to Jack O'Sullivan — grandparents of Jack
(0'Shea, Faunleave and later Canfie. The Malveys of
Barrakilla were said to have come originally from
around Tahilla, near Sneem, Co. Kerry.

Children: — (1) Mary (Nov. 1859); (2) Jim (May
1864) went to live in Ardgroom Village next door to,
and below, Mrs. Kate O'Hara's shop. He had a horse
‘and sidecar to bring people to Castletownbere before
motorcars became popular in the area. Jim married.
Julia O'Sullivan, daughter of Mort O'Sullivan and
Mary O'Shea, Canfie — a sister of Quinlan, who
settled in Ardgroom Village, and of Katie (Mrs. Con
Healy, Canfie); (3) Nora (July 1869); (4) Patsy (Feb.
1873) went to New York and married Joan O'Shea,
daughter of Timothy O'Shea and Joan O'Shea,
Glenbeg.

NANCE (DHONCHA EOIN) 0’SULLIVAN
‘This was Tadhg Og's second marriage. He and
Nance were ard cousins, They had two children: — (1)
‘Tady (Mar. 1st 1883) lived for some time in a house
between Nano Shea’s (Mrs. Patsy O'Sullivan) and
Johnny (Jude Eoin) O'Sullivan’s in Western Cantie,
close to Ardgroom Village. He died later in Nano
Shea's, Nano was married to Tady's Ist cousin, Patsy
Phil Dhonacha Eoin O'Sullivan; (2) Kate (Feb. 20th
1887) emigrated to the U.S.A.

JANE HAMPSTON
Sean O'Shea was the great-great grandfather of
the present Sean O'Shea. Jane Hampston was of the
same family as the Hampstons of Barrakilla who
‘went to Cuhig later. Of the family of Sean O'Shea and
Jane Hampston, we can trace six: — (1) Mary
married Donal Sheehan (Tim Jer Sheehan's
grandfather), Eskadower — between Colleros and
Lauragh; (2) Kate married Timothy Lehane, son of
‘Tadhg O Liathain and Mary Harrington, Claondaire,
Kate was mother of Paddy Lehane etc.; (3) Ellen
married Jerry Phadraig O'Sullivan, Gortalassa,
Barrakilla; (4) *Morty married in the home farm to
Mary O'Neill, daughter of Daniel O'Neill and Mary
Harrington, Direenavogig, Ardgroom; (5) Julia (Sepi.
1844); (6) Johanna (Aug. 1845) went to New Haven,
Conn, U.S.A.

Morty and Mary had 7 children: — (1) Julia (June
1860) went to Enfield, near Hartiord, Connecticut,
U.S.A. and married Danie! O'Donovan; (2) Mike went
to Springfield, Mass.; (3) Patsy (Feb. 1867) was a
shoemaker and lived at home; (4) *Johnny (Jan 1870)
settled down in the home farm and married Margaret
(O'Mahony, daughter of Dan O'Mahony, Glenmore; (5)
Mary (Nov. 1872) wert to Enfield, near Hartford,
Conn., U.S.A. and became Mrs. Ames; (6) Mort (July
10th 1876) died young; (7) James (Apr. 2nd 1878) died
young.

‘*Mike (Jan. 1st 1692) settled in the home farm and
married Joan O'Sullivan, daughter of John O'Sullivan
and Maire McCarthy, Fay, Kileatherine — a sister of
Dan (Mhaire) McCarthy; (2) & (3) Mary (June 2tst
1894) and Brigid both went to Hartford, Connecticut,
U.S.A; (4) Margaret went to Hartford, Con., and
matried David Browne, a native of Scotland; (5) Julia
(Apr. 10th 1902) went to Hartford, Cono., and married
Dan Scanlon, a native of the Killarney’ District; (6)
Noreen (Oct. 30th 1905) marriea Micnael O'Shea, son
of Thomas O'Shea and Mary Casey, Derrimihan,
Castletowabere

Mike and Joan hed three children: — (1) Mary
(July 28th 1933) married ‘Tim O'Donoghue, son of
Geoffrey O'Donoghue and ‘Abbey O'Mahony, Cubig —
on the Kerry side of the boundary river to the east of
Gurteen and Barrakilla; (2) Margaret (Mar. 12th
1937) married Terence Connolly, a native of Cork
ity. They live in Ballincoltig; (3) *Sean (Sept. 4th
1940) setiled down in the home farm and married
Sheila O'Sullivan, daughter of Dannie O'Sullivan,
Eyeriesbeg & Agnes (Roger) O'Sullivan, Barrakilla.

‘The Hartnett (Bawns) came from Ardea, Co.
Kerry, We can trace two brothers and two sisters of
those who came first in the 1860's. Paddy (Bawn)
Hartnett was married to a Catherine O'Sullivan, in
Gorteen, Ardgroom — just at the back and about 50
yards to the south of Mike (John D.) O'Sullivan’s
house; Nell (Bawn) Hartnett. married Jack
McCarthy, Cappacluherane, Ardgroom —
grandparents of the present John McCarthy. Peig(Bawn) Hartnett married Mike O'Shea, Gortalassa,
Barrakilla — parents of Patsy O'Shea; Tadhg (Bawn)
Hartnett settled down in Gortalassa, Barrakilla, and
married a Catherine O'Sullivan.

CATHERINE O’SULLIVAN

‘Tadhg and Catherine had 7 children: — (1) John
(May 1870) emigrated to the United States. Married
first to a Co, Cavan girl, Katie Baxter. Later married
Rose Williams in Ohio, U.S.A.;(2) Michael (Sept.
1872) also emigrated to the U.S.A.; (3) Julia (Feb.
2ist 1875) became the 2nd wife of Quinlan O'Sullivan
(shoemaker), son of Mort O'Sullivan & Mary O'Shea,
Canfie. They lived for a while in Gorteen, Atdgroom.
Alter Julia died, Quinlan later married for the third
time — to Mary Leahy, Reenavaude — and moved to
‘Ardgroom Village; (4) *Pat (eb. 4th 1877) settled in
the home farm’ and married Katie O'Sullivan
(Shearhig), daughter of Tade O'Sullivan (Sheathig)
and Mary Power, CoulaghArd; (5) Margaret (Oct. 3rd
1882) went to the U.S.A. ; (6) Tim (Aug. 5th 1885) had a
public house in Castletownbere (now Paddy
Harrington's pub). He married Johanna McCarthy,
daughter of Jim McCarthy and Peig O'Sullivan,
Kileatherine — near John Leahy's and John (Con)
O’Sullivan's. When Tim died, his wife came out to
live in the eastern end of Eyeries Village; (7) Daniel
(Dee. 2nd 1888) went to the U.S.A.

‘There were 11 children in the family: — (1) Mary
(Jan. 18th 1906) went to New York, and married a Co.
Clare man Martin Moloney; (2) Julia (Mar. 21st 1907)
went to New York and married a Waterford man, Pat
Cullen; (3) Tade (Nov. 3rd 1908) went to New York
and married Anna O'Neill, daughter of Connie O'Neill
and Mary MeCarthy, Coulagh; (4) ‘John (Oct. 18th
1911) seitled down in the home farm and married
Agnes Harrington (Causkey), daughter of Patsy
Harrington (Causkey) and’ Mary Harrington,
Kileatherine Point; (5) Margaret (Oct. 29th 1913),
went to New York and married a Banter (Co. Cork)
man, James O'Callaghan; (6) Catherine (Dec. 3ist
1916) married in New York to Irving Arras; (7) Pat
(Apr. 4th 1918) went to Birmingham, England.
Married Eileen Murphy, Gurranes, Cahermore,
Allihies. Later moved to London; (8) Pete (June 28th
1919) went to London. Married a'Co. Offaly girl Lena
Marum; (8) Nellie (Aug. 13th 1921) married Jim
(Tade) ‘O'Sullivan, son of James O'Sullivan and
Catherine Sheehan, Glenmore, Lauragh; (10) Anna
(Dee. 2nd 1924) married Jackie O'Leary, son of
Patrick O'Leary and Mary O'Sullivan, Ardea. They
later went to New York; (11) Thomas (May 31st 1930)
went to London and married a Co. Mayo girl, Teresa
Gallagher.

John and Agnes had 9 children: — (1) Mary (Aug.
6th 1950), a nurse in Dublin; (2) Catherine (Aug. 27th
1851) works in the Telephone Exchange in
Cahirciveen, Co. Kerry. She married Kieran Kelleher,
Cahirciveen’ (2) Pat (June 22nd 1953); (4) Ann (Mar.
17th 1955); (5) Timmy (Oct. 26th 1956); (6) John Joe
(May 23rd 1959); (7) Gerard (Sept. 17th 1960); (8)
Paul (July 18th 1962) and (9) Thornas (June 7th 1964).

The first of the O'Shea (Gortalassa) family was
Dan O'Shea who came from Glengarriff and married
‘an O'Shea gir] {rom Barrakilla — a sister of old Sean
‘O'Shea who was married to Jane Hampston. Another
brother of Dan O'Shea went to Barreeragh, above
Bonane — between Kenmare and Glengarriff. This
brother was the great-grandfather of Jack O'Shea
(Faunleave & Canfie) and grandfather of Seamus
O'Shea, Curragh, Droumard. Yet another brother
wen’. to Glenmore and was greatgrandfather of
Hannak O'Shea (Mrs, Tade O'Leary), Canfie. We can
trace two sons of Dan O'Shea who came to Gortlassa.
‘They were Mike O'Shea and Batt O'Shea. Batt O'Shea
martied Peig Crowiey, an aunt of Peier Crowley,
Direenacappaire, Ardgroom, and moved down to live
in Gorteen, Ardgroom Outward. Mike O'Shea settled
down in the home farm in Gortalassa and married
Peig (Bawn) Hartnett, Gortalassa — a sister of Paddy
(Bawn) Hartnett who came from Ardea to Gurteen,
and of Tadhg Bawn Hartnett who went to Gortalassa,
and_of Nell (Bawn) Hartnett who married Jack
McCarthy, Cappacluherane.

PEIG HARTNETT

Mike and Peig had 9 children: — (1) Mary (Nov.
1865) went to California; (2) *Patsy (June 1868)
settled down in the home farm and married Brigid
O'Shea, daughter of Dan O'Shea and Catherine
Merwick, Pulleen, Ardgroom; (3) & (4) Michael (May
1870) and Batt (Mar. 1871) both went to Hartford,
Conn., U.S.A. where Michael married Margaret
O'Leary from Glengarriff; (5) Daniel (May 16th 1873)
died young; (6) Margaret (June Sth 1874) went to New
York and became Mrs. Cronin; (7) Jim (Apr. Ist 1876)
died young; (8) Jim — the second Jim — born Mar.
26th i882, went to Springfield, Mass.; (9) Brigid (Jan.
6th 1885) went to Pennsylvania, U.S.A.
