Types of Armature Winding

There are two types of armature windings in DC machines: lap winding and wave winding. Lap winding has coils connected to adjacent commutator segments under the same pole, with the number of parallel paths and brush positions equal to the number of poles. It is used for low voltage, high current loads. Wave winding has coils connected to commutator segments two pole pitches apart, with always two parallel paths and two brush positions. It is used for high voltage, low current loads.

Types of Armature Winding:

There are two types of armature windings in DC machines

1. LAP winding
2. WAVE winding

LAP Winding:

In Lap winding, the finishing end of one coil is connected to commutator segment and
to the starting end of the adjacent coil situated under the same pole and so on till all
the coils have been connected. This type of winding derives its name from the fact
that it doubles or laps back with its succeeding coils.
 The number of parallel paths is equal to the number of poles.
 The number of brush positions on the commutator equals the number of poles.
 The two ends of an armature coil are connected to the two adjacent
commutator segments.
 The lap wound generators are used for supplying low voltage, high current
loads.
WAVE Winding:

In wave winding, a conductor under one pole is connected at the back to a conductor
which occupies an almost corresponding position under the next pole of opposite
polarity. Because the progresses in one direction round the armature in a series of
waves, it is called wave winding
 The number of parallel paths are always two.
 The number of brush positions on the commutator equals to two.
 The two ends of an armature coil are connected to the two commutator
segments which are two pole pitches apart.
 The lap wound generators are used for supplying high voltage, low current
loads.
