MORPHOLOGY
• Trophozoite
– oblong, sheroid, or slender.
– 30-50 microns long and 20-120 microns
wide.
– Macronucleus (bean shape) and a
micronucleus (hidden)
– A cystostome located anteriorly cytopyge
posteriorly.
– Two contractile vacuoles in the middle
and posterior end.
– Food vacuoles contain erythrocytes, cell
fragments, feces, and starch granules.
– Living trophozoites are yellow or green in
color.
• Cyst
– spheroid or ovoid.
– 40-60 microns in diameter.
– Micro and macro nuclei can be seen
– Wall are made from one or two layer
  Trophozoite Cyst
Shape Oval, pointed at anterior end Spherical
Size 50-130 mm long by 20-70 mm wide 40-60 mm across
Surface Covered in cilia Covered with thick, hard cyst wall with
cilia sometimes visible underneath

Motility Rotary or boring motility, “like a thrown football” Non-motile

Infectious Not infective Infective

Reproduction By binary fission or conjugation Non-reproductive

Nuclei Macronucleus (kidney-shaped) and micronucleus Only macronucleus (kidney-shaped)

(spherical, next to macronucleus) visible visible; contractile vacuole visible in young
cysts; in older cysts, organelle structures
look granular

Important cell Funnel-shaped cytostome (cell mouth) near anterior Cyst wall made of one or two layers
structures end; 2 contractile vacuoles

Diagnosis Occasionally found in feces, often found in tissue Diagnostically found in feces of infected
biopsies of infected individuals individuals
• Secondary bacterial infection
• Colon ulcer develop leading to
infiltration by lymphocyte and PMNL
• Protelytic enzyme digest intestinal
epithelium
PATHOGENESIS
CLINICAL MANIFESTATION
• diarrhoea, dysentery, nausea, foul breath,
colitis, abdominal pain, tenesmus, weight loss,
deep intestinal ulcerations, and perforation of
the intestine.
DIAGNOSIS
• Stool examination reveals trophozoite with or without
cyst.
• B. Coli is passed periodically, therefore stool samples
should be collected frequently and examined
immediately in order to make a definitive diagnosis.
• Detection in tissue ulcer using sigmoidscope discover
trophzoite.
