4.2 Quad Func in Vertex Form (Alg3-4)

This document discusses the vertex form of quadratic functions. The vertex form is written as y = a(x – h)2 + k, where (h, k) represents the vertex or turning point of the parabola. The characteristics of vertex form are that the vertex is located at the point (h, k) and the axis of symmetry is the vertical line where x = h. An example problem walks through the steps of graphing a quadratic function in vertex form, which involves identifying the vertex, drawing the axis of symmetry, plotting two other points, and then reflecting those points to sketch the parabolic shape. Two additional practice examples are provided.

2 Quadratic Functions in Vertex Form (day 1)

Standard form of a quadratic function is y = ax2 + bx + c.
Vertex form of a quadratic function is y = a(x – h)2 + k, where h is the horizontal translation (shift) and k
is the vertical translation (shift). Reminder- a will indicate the direction the graph opens (up if positive,
down if negative)

Characteristics of Vertex Form

• Vertex is located at (h, k)
• Axis of Symmetry is x = h

Watch Me- Graph y = 2(x – 3)2 – 5

Step 1- Identify and plot the vertex. Vertex is located at (3, -5)
Step 2- Draw the axis of symmetry.
Step 3- Plot two other points. The other points will come from substituting values in for x and solving for
y. Pick two x value to the left or right of the vertex.
Step 4- Plot the mirror images of the marked coordinates and sketch the graph.

Ex 1 Graph y = -3(x – 1)2 + 2 Ex 2 Graph y = ¼(x +2)2 – 3
