STUDY MAPS EXAM 1

These Maps are designed to help you when reading the Chapters and studying for Exams. These are
guidelines for the TEXT ONLY. They DO NOT cover class lecture material that will also be covered
on the exams. When you study this information you should work to both “know and understand” the
material. To “know and understand” means:
 To have a thorough grasp of the concept in question ... what is, how it works, and why it is
important.
 To be able to distinguish the concept from other concepts in the text,
 To be able to recognize examples of the concept within real-life contexts, and
 To be able to distinguish examples of the concept from examples of other concepts.

Chapter 1
What is Interpersonal Communication (textbook and lecture definitions)?
What are the five (5) functions of communication?
Know the difference between the linear and transactional models of communication.
Know the components of interpersonal communication and how the process works.
Understand the five (5) Communication Principles listed in your text.
What is communication competence?
Identify and describe the skills associated with competent.

Chapter 6
What is culture?
Identify and define the four (4) dimensions of culture that affect communication.
What is the difference between individualistic and collectivistic cultures?
What is the difference between a masculine and feminine culture?
What is a co-culture? Know examples.
Explain the barriers that exist because of cultural differences.
Know how to improve intercultural communication competence.

Chapter 2
Know the stages of the perception process.
What is self-perception? What is self-concept? What is self-esteem?
Know how the self-concept develops.
What is the self-fulfilling prophecy?
How can you improve self-esteem/change your self concept?
What is self talk?
What does it mean to say the self is socially constructed? How do social roles affect self?
Know How and Why we manage self.
What are the six (6) perceptual inaccuracies? Know examples of each.
What is perception checking? How do you do it?

Know the terms introduced and discussed in class and those on the handouts provided.
