Radio Direction Finder: Group Members

This document summarizes a student project to build a radio direction finder. It includes the names of three group members and their supervisor. It describes how previous similar projects had limitations and were manually tuned. The goal of this project is to create a more advanced design using an automatic antenna array and electronic circuitry to compute the direction of a broadcasting transmitter through triangulation and display the location on a compass. It outlines the roadmap for the first semester which includes literature review, studying Sallen key filters, and implementing a control board with filters, oscillators, and a compass display.

INTRODUCTION
The purpose of this project is to locate a broadcasting transmitter in
a geographical area. Last time a similar project was done but that had a
lot of limitations and secondly it needed to be manually tuned (which
was a sort of issue) and thus required a lot of time just to set the
antennas. Our project is much more advance than that in which we have
applied portable antenna array, these antennas are automatically steered
by an electronic circuitry and then by using the concept of
triangulation, our circuitry automatically computes the direction of the
broadcasting transmitter and the location is displayed on the compass
display.

Mont S.No Tasks To Be Performed Sub Tasks

h
1. Literature Overview  Literature
1st  Study of alternate design
approaches

2. Study of Sallen key Filters  Simulation of the filters.

 Partial Simulation of the
Circuit.

2nd 3. Control Board  Implementation Of filter

chains.
 Oscillators
 Compass Display Design
 Literature
we studied the main concepts about our project its working and its basic
principles.
 Study of alternate design approaches
we approached different designs for the building of our project. That
basically include antenna design.
 In alternate design approach we
analyzed different antenna designs .
1. Manual antenna.(we need to rotate it our self)
2. Automatic antenna.(used a feed back path
towards motor through which the antenna is
rotated towards the transmitter).
3. Static antenna (The antenna remains static
physically but logically rotating).
PROJECT OVERVIEW

 The following is the rough overview of the radio

direction finder in which 4 antennas; these
antennas are operated automatically by antenna
driver circuit. Sallen key filters, which are high
precision analog filters are used and a clock along
with binary, data selector is used to automatically
turn each antenna on for a fraction of milli-
seconds to obtain the readings. Then these
readings are displayed on the Compass Display.
