Spectrogram

A spectrogram is a visual representation of the spectrum of frequencies of a signal as they vary with time. It displays time on the horizontal axis, frequency on the vertical axis, and amplitude as variations in darkness. Spectrograms are useful for analyzing audio signals like speech and music by showing changes in the frequency spectrum over time. They can also be used to analyze the performance of signal processors and create music by directly manipulating the spectrogram.

Spectrogram

Definition:

A graphic or photographic representation of a spectrum. The spectrogram is a

basic tool in audio spectral analysis and other fields. It has been applied extensively in
speech analysis. The spectrogram can be defined as an intensity plot of the Short-Time
Fourier Transform (STFT) magnitude. The STFT is simply a sequence of FFTs of windowed
data segments, where the windows are usually allowed to overlap in time.

In spectrograms, time is displayed on the horizontal axis, and frequency on

the vertical axis. The amplitude of the frequency components (which in spectra is
indicated on the y axis) is expressed by means of the degree of blackness (more energy,
more blackness).

Applications:

 Spectrum diagrams are useful for seeing the state of a complex wave
during a very short period of time. Spectrograms are a convenient way
to diagram the changes in signal spectrum over time.

 Some modern music is created using spectrograms as an intermediate

medium; changing the intensity of different frequencies over time, or
even creating new ones, by drawing them and then inverse
transforming.
 Spectrograms can be used to analyze the results of passing a test signal
through a signal processor such as a filter in order to check its
performance.
