Percentiles &amp Normal Distr (2-3) Biostatistics

This document discusses percentiles and the normal distribution. It provides examples of calculating percentiles for standard normal distributions and normal distributions with specified means and standard deviations. It also includes tutorial problems asking the reader to find percentiles for normally distributed variables like test scores and blood pressure, using z-scores and the properties of the normal distribution.

• Percentile are position measures used in
educational health related fields to indicate
the position of an individual in a group
• Percentile divide the data set into 100
equal groups. At least n% of the data lie
below the nth percentile, and at most (100-
n)% of the data lie above the nth
percentile. E.g. 90th percentile indicates
that at least 90% of the data lie below it,
and at most 10% of the data lie above it.

Percentiles of normal distribution
In order to compute the percentiles of a
normal probability distribution, first we
need to learn the computation of
percentiles of the standard normal
distribution using the standard normal
table.

Examples
1. Suppose Z has a standard normal
distribution. A) Find the 84th percentile of
this distribution

4
5
Examples cont..
b) Find the 50th percentile or the median of
the standard normal distribution

6
Examples cont..
c. Find the 16th Percentile of this distribution.

2. Suppose the reaction time of a particular
durg X, has a normal distribution with a
mean of 10 min and a standard deviation
of 2 min.
a) Find the 50th Percentile or median
reaction time

b) What will be the 84th Percentile of the

reaction time?

9
3. Suppose the age in a population has a
normal distribution with mean 50 years
and standard deviation of 10 yrs.
a) Find the 50th percentile of the variable
age
b) Find the 65th percentile of the variable
age
c) Find the 10th percentile of the variable
age

Tutorial
1. If a set of score on an epidemiology
examination are approximately normally
distributed with a mean of 76 and standard
deviation of 4, find:
a. what is the 33rd percentile of the variable score
b. What percent of the students who take this
examination score at most 78?what percentile is
score 78?
c. What percent of the students who take this
examination get a score at least 67? What
percentile

2. The following figure shows that assumed
distribution for systolic blood pressure readings
of a large male population

a. Determine the Z score for the various cut off points

b. Find the equivalent cut off points in terms of systolic blood
pressure if the mean is 130mmHg and standard deviation is 17
mmHg
