Power Saver Report.

The document summarizes tests conducted on a Power Saver device. Test 1 on a residential load found a 5.8% reduction in energy consumption and an 8% increase in voltage harmonics. Test 2 on a commercial load found a 4.6% rise in current harmonics but a 4.8% reduction in voltage harmonics along with an 11.8% improvement in power factor. Testing also showed reductions in current, apparent power consumption, and negligible effect on active power consumption. The conclusions were that consumers could save up to 12% on electricity bills and utilities would benefit from reduced loading and improved power factor. Monitoring of harmonics effects may be needed if adopted widely.

Report on Power Saver

Scope of the Study

The tests conducted for evaluation of performance of the
Power Saver are as follows :

 Test 1: Effect on Energy Consumption and

Harmonics at residential load

 Test 2: Effect on Harmonics and other

System Parameters at commercial load
Test Results
 Test 1: Effect on Energy Consumption and Harmonics at
residential load

 a) Energy Consumption :

 Percentage reduction in units per month: 5.8%

 Estimated reduction in units per month: 24 Units (For 5510W load)
 Estimated savings per month (assuming average unit cost to be Rs. 3.95): Rs.
96 /-
 Cost of Power Saver Unit: Rs 1350/-
 Payback period : 14 Months

 b) Harmonics :
 The rise in voltage Total Harmonic Distortion is 8%
 There is 1.4% rise in Current harmonics
Test Results
Test 2: Effect on Harmonics and other System Parameters at
commercial load

 Rise in Current harmonics by 4.6%

 Reduction in Voltage harmonics by 4.8%
 Instant improvement of Power Factor by 11.8%
 Reduction of Current by 9.7%
 Reduction of Apparent Power consumption by 10%
 Negligible effect on the Active Power consumption
 Effect on Harmonics and other System Parameters by LT APFCR

Conclusions
 Benefits to the Consumer
– Up to 10 to 12% savings in electricity bill amount depending on the consumption
pattern.

 Benefits to the Utility

(Provided a large number of power saver units are installed)

– Reduction in current drawn from the source

– Reduced loading of lines & transformers
– Improvement of Load Power Factor
– Reduction in Reactive Power Consumption
– Reduction in T&D losses
– More numbers of consumers per DT

 The effect of harmonics on DT, when used on a large scale would have to
be monitored.
