Sensor

An automotive rain sensor uses infrared light to detect moisture on a vehicle's windshield. It works by beaming infrared light at a 45 degree angle onto the windshield from inside the car. If the glass is wet, less light is reflected back to the sensor, which then signals the wiper control module to automatically turn on the wipers based on the amount of moisture detected. The rain sensor measures moisture intensity by using an optical sensor that detects disturbances in reflected infrared light beams on the windshield.

Rain Sensor

• Automotive rain sensors detect rain falling on the

windshield of a vehicle.
• Although rain sensors first appeared on
automobiles 50 years ago
• One of the more common rain sensor
implementations employs an infrared light that is
beamed at a 45-degree angle onto the windshield
from inside the car. If the glass is wet, less light
makes it back to the sensor, and the wipers turn on.
Specification of sensor
How the sensor work
• An infrared beam is reflected off the outside surface of
the windshield to the infrared sensor array.
• When moisture strikes the windshield, the system
experiences an interruption to its infrared beam.
• Advanced analog and digital signal processing
determines the intensity of rain or snow.
• The sensor communicates to the wiper control module
to switch on the wiper motor and controls the wipers
automatically according to the moisture intensity
detected.
Location of Sensor
Method of sensor measurement
• This rain sensor system operate by using optical
sensor.
• Optical sensor detecting by reflecting
harmonious light beams within the windscreen.
• This harmony is disturbed, creating a drop in
the light beam intensity
• The system then activates the wipers to operate
in full automatic mode.
