Practice 5 and 6

The document contains two practice problems about springs and oscillatory motion. Practice 5 contains three problems about finding the equation of motion for masses attached to springs, with different external driving forces and damping conditions applied. Practice 6 contains two problems about obtaining power series solutions to differential equations around the point x=0.

PRACTICE 5

1. When a mass of 3 kg is attached to a spring whose constant is 48 N/m, it comes to rest in

the equilibrium position. Starting at t 0 , a force equal to f (t ) 6 cos 2t is applied to
the system. Find the equation of motion in the absence of damping.

2. A mass 2 kg is attached to a spring whose constant is 18 N/m. The mass is initially

released from rest from a point 2 m below the equilibrium position, and the subsequent
motion takes place in a medium that offers negligible damping. Find the equation of
motion if the mass is driven by an external force equal to f (t ) 2 cos t .

3. A 1-kg mass is attached to a spring whose constant is 16 N/m, and the entire system is
then submerged in a liquid that imparts a damping force numerically equal to 10 times
the instantaneous velocity. Determine the equation of motion if the mass is initially
released from rest from a point 1 m below the equilibrium position.

PRACTICE 6

1. Obtain two linearly independent power series solutions about x = 0 for the differential
equation y 2 xy 2y 0

2. Obtain two linearly independent power series solutions about x = 0 for the differential
equation y x2 y xy 0
