Mixed Logic Analysis and Synthesis Examples

The document provides 4 examples of using mixed logic techniques to implement and analyze circuits. The examples demonstrate: 1) Implementing circuits using only NOR or NAND gates by starting with a positive logic implementation and adding slashes or inverters. 2) Reading the Boolean logic function from a mixed logic circuit and seeing how the function does not change if input signal conventions are changed, showing mixed logic decouples implementation from logical behavior. 3) Analyzing a circuit by adding slashes to balance lines before reading the Boolean function, ignoring bubbles.

Mixed Logic Analysis and Synthesis Examples

Example 1 - Implementing Circuits Using Mixed Logic

Implement the following function using mixed logic techniques. Use only NOR gates. All signals are active high.

First, implement the circuit using only positive logic gates.

Next, place slashes indicating the locations of bars.

Now, replace all the gates with NOR gates, while maintaining the correct functionality of the circuit.

Now, balance the bubbles and/or slashes using inverters.

Example 2 - Implementing Circuits Using Mixed Logic

Implement the following function using mixed logic techniques. Use only NAND gates. Assume that A, C, X, Z
and F are active low signals while B, D and Y are active high signals.
First, implement the circuit using only positive logic gates.

Next, place slashes indicating the locations of bars.

Now, replace all the gates with NAND gates, while maintaining the correct functionality of the circuit.

Now, implement the signal restrictions. A, C, X, Z and F are active low signals while B, D and Y are active high
signals.

Now, balance the bubbles and/or slashes using inverters.

Example 3 - Reading a Boolean Function from a Mixed Logic Circuit
Give the Boolean logic function, F, for the following circuit.

Now give the Boolean logic function, F, for the same circuit, except that signals A and D are active low. Compare
the expression with that derived above. What does this tell you about the use of mixed logic notation? Decoupling
the implementation from the logical behavior!

Example 4 - Reading a Boolean Function from a Mixed Logic Circuit

Give the Boolean logic function, F, for the following circuit .In this circuit the slashes have been removed showing
only a gate level schematic!.

First, balance the lines using slashes then read off the function ignoring all bubbles.
