Computer Networks: Virtual Circuits

Virtual circuits in computer networks provide a virtual connection between source and destination hosts by indirectly identifying them through a virtual circuit identifier (VC ID). Each router along the path maintains state for each passing connection, and may allocate link and router resources like bandwidth and buffers to the virtual circuit. Virtual circuits have identifiable phases of setup, where signaling messages are exchanged to initiate the circuit, data transfer using the established circuit, and teardown to terminate the connection.

What is virtual-circuit?
 Computer networks provide only a connection
service at the network layer.
 It is said to be a virtual connection between the
source and destination host.
 The source and destination of a VC are only
indirectly identified through the VC ID(Virtual-
Circuit Identifier).
 Every router on source-dest path maintains
“state” for each passing connection.
 Link, router resources (bandwidth, buffers) may
be allocated to VC.

SIGNALING MESSAGES:

The msg that the end systems send into

the network to initiate or terminate a VC,
the msg passed between the routers to
setup.
SIGNALING PROTOCOLS:
The protocol used to exchange these msgs
are referred as signaling protocols.
