This document provides an introduction to the RedHat Linux operating system. It discusses hardware requirements, including a minimum of 256MB RAM for Pentium Pro processors or 512MB RAM for 64-bit processors. It also requires 2-6GB of disk space and a bootable CD. The document outlines three topics for the first lesson: an introduction to Linux, a brief history of Linux starting in 1991, and the main Linux distributions including RedHat, SuSE, Mandriva Linux, and Debian.

The Debian distribution is produced by a volunteer

Its installation is less easy: You have to answer questions
during the installation the other distributions deduce automatically. Nothing complicated as such, but requiring understanding of and information about hardware most PC users don't want to worry about.
On the other hand, after installation, Debian can be
upgraded to each new release without re-installing anything.
