The document discusses a survey conducted to investigate student concerns about the college canteen service. It identifies issues like food quality, costs and variety as well as suggestions to improve queues, menus and seating.

Students regularly expressed concerns about the costs and quality of food as well as accommodation in the canteen. The survey was conducted to investigate these concerns of the 'customers'.

Suggestions to improve queue times included staggering lunch breaks, hiring more staff, separating drinks and food areas and improving signage and advertisements. Better visibility of menus and prices was also suggested.

CANTEEN

SERVICES
INTRODUCTION
• Apart from courses and faculties, what makes a college
attractive is canteen.
• The canteen is a service that is available to both student
and staff, with no competitive opposition unless staff or
students decide to leave the premises to purchase
elsewhere. However it is not easy to take up other options
given the timetabling arrangements around morning,
midday break and lunchtime and so the canteen is
realistically the only choice.
• Students who use the canteen service have regularly
expressed concerns around costs, quality of food and
accommodation. So the survey was compiled to
investigate concerns of the ‘customers
What is a CANTEEN?
A cafeteria is a type of food service location in which
there is little or no table service, whether a restaurant or
within an institution such as a large office building
or school; a school dining location is also referred to as
a dining hall or canteen (in UK English).
As cafeterias require few employees, they are often
found within a larger institution, catering to the clientele of
that institution. For example, schools, colleges and
their residence halls, department
stores, hospitals, museums, military bases, prisons, and
office buildings often have cafeterias.
OTHER NAMES-
• A cafeteria in a U.S. military installation is known as
a chow hall, a mess hall, a galley, mess decks
• British Armed Forces parlance, it is known as
a cookhouse or mess.
• Students in the USA often refer to cafeterias
as lunchrooms.
• Some monasteries, boarding schools and older
universities refer to their cafeteria as a refectory.
SWOT ANALYSIS
STRENGTHS:
Loyal Customer Base, Potentially Large Volume, Simple
tastes creating scope to source basic ingredients for
higher profit margins.

WEAKNESSES:
Any bad rumours, or unhappiness with credit can spread
very fast, and you may find yourself out of business after
having placed all your eggs in one basket. Depending on
the age group, may not be able to charge much.
SWOT ANALYSIS
OPPORTUNITIES:
Could start selling things such as cake, low fat flapjacks,
etc. A total monopoly over students, giving way to the
opportunity to cut costs even if it causes quality of
product to lapse; they have no other choice but to buy
from you.
THREATS:
The possibility of one bad customer's experience causing
a decrease in sales. Causing your sales to dip while you
devise an alternative.
Eatables stores around the college campus can be
another threat.
